James Butterworth joined the faculty of the Sage College School of Education in Troy, N.Y.in Fall 2006 as associate professor in Educational Leadership and as a faculty member in the colleges new Ed.D. program preparing the next generation of outstanding educational system leaders. Dr. Butterworths research interests focus on systemic school improvement, with special emphasis on the challenges facing chronically low performing schools.
Over the past twenty years, he has served regularly as an adjunct professor at the University at Albany and the College of St. Rose and presented frequently at regional, statewide and national conferences. Butterworth holds a Ph.D. in educational administration and masters degrees in educational administration and social studies, all from the University at Albany.
From 1999-2006, Dr. Butterworth served as New York States Assistant Commissioner of Education leading the State Education Departments Office of School Improvement and Community Services. In this capacity, he led the state and regional offices of Regional School Services, Student Support Services, Planning/Professional Development, Charter Schools, Native American Education, Research and Evaluation, Non-Public Schools, Technology Policy and Child Nutrition.
His responsibilities included the implementation of No Child Left Behind requirements in schools outside New York City, installation of a regional network strategy to assist low performing schools, leadership of statewide discussions regarding middle schools and high school completion and implementation of state regulations in such areas as school safety, attendance, academic intervention, professional development plans and professional performance reviews.
Prior to joining the State Education Department, Butterworth served as superintendent of schools in the Averill Park (1996-1999) and Schodack (1985-1996) Central Schools and as principal of Maple Hill High School and Maple Hill Middle School in Castleton, New York. He began his career as a middle and high school teacher in the Averill Park Schools in Averill Park, New York. He resides in Castleton, New York with his wife, Sandy, and dog, Molly, and enjoys hiking, gardening and reading.
