Sage Educational Leadership & Learning Academy

The School of Education has created a new center, the Sage Educational Leadership & Learning Academy, or "SELLA," to house its many community outreach programs.

Help Yourself Academy

The School of Education has collaborated with the Help Yourself Foundation to establish an after school program for minority and at-risk students to build the pipeline into health science fields. Students in grades 3-8 in the Troy school district come to the Russell Sage campus after school and take part in the foundation's STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum. Students' academic achievement in school will be closely monitored following their participation in the program.

Sage All Stars

The Esteves School of Education provides Troy middle school students (dubbed “Sage All Stars”) with an after school program addressing literacy, wellness, and career education. Middle school is a critical time in determining future academic success or failure. The program helps students effectively negotiate social pressures and be academically successful; improves their academic skills and sense of efficacy so they enter high school with confidence; and encourages them to view post-secondary education and/or training as viable choices in their lives.

Scholars Institute

Modeled after the highly successful Harlem Children's Zone initiative, the Scholars Institute at Sage brings fifth- and sixth-grade students from the City School District of Albany to Sage's Albany campus three times a week for an after-school enriched academic program. The students enhance their reading and writing skills in small groups with certified teachers hired by the district. Esteves School of Education pre-service teacher education candidates serve as mentors, for which they earn field experience hours. The goal of the program is to provide students with the academic rigor and structure they will need to be successful in middle school, high school and college.
