The Scholars Institute: A Collaborative Initiative with Albany City Schools & The Sage Colleges
Modeled after the highly successful Harlem Children’s Zone’s initiative, the Scholars Institute is an after-school enriched academic program providing children with the opportunity to enhance their reading and writing skills and read the finest of children’s literature. Its goal is to ensure students are prepared for middle school by providing the rigor and structure they will need to be successful in middle school, high school and college, providing the foundation now for future education and life success.
The Scholars Institute at Sage brings fifth and sixth-grade students from the City School District of Albany (CSDA) to the Sage College of Albany (SCA) three afternoons each week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) for intensive small-group instruction by certified teachers hired by the district and facilitated by Esteves School of Education pre-service teacher education candidates who will serve as mentors. Candidates may fulfill some of their required field experience hours on-site at SCA; elementary children are afforded the opportunity of getting to know a college campus. Albany student transportation will be provided by Durham bus company.
