Proposal Guidelines for Study Abroad Program and Course Proposals
Sage is developing innovative and significant study abroad opportunities for students as an important component of their education. Study Abroad programs enhance our curriculum and help to provide students with global perspectives and culturally diverse experiences. We should be encouraging our students to take advantage of these opportunities, as well as showcasing them to assist with recruitment.
We encourage faculty to engage in ongoing assessment of current Study Abroad options and discussion/generation of additional experiences. Department chairs, and other representatives of the faculty are encouraged to talk with the Global Education staff, Directors, and faculty colleagues in other schools/colleges to learn about and connect with appropriate thematic efforts where collaboration might make sense.
Sage Global Education offers five different kinds of Study Abroad experiences for students:
Short-term abroad – a regular semester Sage course which has a Study Abroad component (typically 1-2 weeks) embedded within it. Students pay an additional program fee to participate in the Study Abroad component. They typically enroll for an extra credit for the semester to cover the extra work. For undergraduates, 1 additional semester credit costs them no additional tuition unless it put them over the 19-credit limit.
Summer short-term program abroad for credit – a stand-alone summer course or program of courses offered through Sage Global Education, or another location abroad. Students pay tuition, room and board, plus a program fee.
Semester abroad at a Global Partner – students attending another institution with whom we have or create an affiliation.
Study Tours – a one to two week tour within the United States or abroad. This tour will be open to the entire Sage community, including alumni, students, administration, and staff. It is an opportunity to create and develop connections, while offering wonderful learning experiences for every individual.
Faculty Teaching Abroad for Summer short-term abroad programs. The faculty costs (travel and lodging) are built into the program fee that students pay above and beyond tuition. Please bear in mind that the more extensive the instructional costs (e.g., team-teaching a course or high travel costs), the higher the program fee charged to the student, which often reduces enrollment and leads to cancellation of the course or program.
Study Abroad Proposal Process. If you or your department colleagues have an idea for a specific Study Abroad course or program, the following steps serve as guidelines to putting a proposal together and shepherding it through the review and approval process. Please pay particular attention to specific dates for submitting proposals for different types of courses or programs.

Develop the initial concept or idea for a course or a program of course offerings into preliminary written proposal – informal discussions should take place with department colleagues, the Global Education staff, and the Dean’s Office. Discussions should focus on:
- Fit with program/college academic mission/curriculum.
- Value-added by particular Study Abroad location.
- Potential student interest and conflicts with other existing Study Abroad offerings that might compete for the same student enrollments.
- Costs associated with the program or course. (development of initial budget)
If there is strong support based on this preliminary round of input, develop a formal written proposal, which should include:
- 2-3 page narrative providing detailed rationale for the course/program (addressing the issues listed above)
- Copy of all relevant syllabi (fully developed)
- Proposed budget and estimated cost of student program fee (work this out with the Office of Global Education)
Submit formal written proposal for review and approval at each of the following levels or review:
- Department approval.
- Department Chair signs off on proposal form;
- Dean’s approval. Dean signs off on proposal form;
- Sage Curriculum Committee Approval
- Global Education approval
The Office for Global Education will promote the course offerings, registers students, works out details for travel, lodging, etc.
Notes on Developing a Budget Proposal. Keep in mind that expenses associated with a Study Abroad experience are affected by a host of variables that may include location, strength of the U.S. dollar, political climate, student enrollment, faculty salaries, airfare, lodging, field trips, lectures, etc. The more you can keep costs at a reasonable level, the greater the likelihood of a successful proposal. The Office of Student Life can assist you in preparing a budget.
