Blending the Real World with the Classroom
Tia Wager, Senior Interned with The Towne Tavern Summer 2007 Tia described her internship as "helping me in meeting my goals by allowing me to realize that my education has taught me about how to handle real life situations. This internship also gave me a lot of management experience. I have gained a lot of knowledge in running an organization. This internship taught me the duties and skills a business owner must have." Heather Colvin, Senior Interned with the Vancouver Canadians Baseball Club Summer 2007 Heather decided quite a while ago that she wants to be a business manager of a sports team. Cindy Vickery, Senior Interned with the NYS Division of the Budget Summer 2006 Below shows Cindy giving her final presentation in the Capitol Building, Albany, New York. Cindy completed over the summer a six-credit internship. Cindy's supervisor said about her, "Cindy gives excellent attention to detail, has wonderful technical know-how, and has a drive to produce quickly very high quality work." Cindy described her internship experience as one where she was able to broaden her horizons while learning about how NYS government operates. "I like working for the State. It is a great place to work with a wonderful culture." Cindy cited her college courses, particularly in Human Resource Management, Software Applications in Business, and Principles of Management as providing her with the skills to successfully complete the assignments she was given.

Katherine Dunphy, student intern with the NYS Division of the Budget, Administration and Information Technology Services Department, Summer 2006 Working full time during the summer Katie was given the opportunity to work on an extensive diversity project, participate in briefing sessions on the executive budget process, and various program/policy issues. Andrea Swank, student intern with Merrill Lynch, Fall 2006. When asked to describe what her internship experience meant to her, Andrea said, "I think the most beneficial thing was actually being able to learn outside the classroom. Erin credits her college courses in Public Speaking, for helping her to gain confidence in speaking in front of others; her Organizational Behavior and Organizational Development courses helped her to understand why people do what they do in the work place. Lauren Reamon, student intern with Gettysburg Flag Works, Inc., Summer 2006. When discussing her internship, Lauren said, "My expectations fell short of the experience I received. I learned first-hand what working for a small business was like. I became an instant part of the team, and was given the opportunity to flourish and expand on all the skills I already had somewhere inside of me." Lauren's supervisor said "Lauren fit well into the fabric of the store and established good rapport with all." At the conclusion of the internship, Lauren's supervisor wrote to her faculty sponsor and said, "I can't wait until our next intern. Each one teaches us something about our business that we don't know until we try to teach someone else. It was a great experience."
