Faculty | Julie Guay McIntyre

Dr. Julie Guay McIntyre is Associate Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Russell Sage College Honors Program. Dr. McIntyre holds a BA from SUNY College at Plattsburgh and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Syracuse University.

Julie loves teaching and interacting with students both inside and out of the classroom. She teaches a variety of courses including introductory psychology, child psychology, psychology of adolescence & adulthood, human development, health psychology, and group dynamics. All of her courses emphasize the integration and application of research findings--in fact, she often draws upon examples of her sons, J.W. and Joseph, to make developmental research "come alive."

Her research interests lie in the areas of stress and coping among adolescents and adults, the link between parenting and the development of coping style, as well as the relation among stress and coping and health. Her research has focused on the role that personality variables and coping style play in the effectiveness of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA). The preliminary results of this work were presented during the summer of 1999 at an international conference on Health Psychology. Most recently she and her developmental colleagues have had a paper accepted for an upcoming issue of the journal Teaching of Psychology. She is also co-authoring a chapter for The Handbook of Adolescence on self-concept and self-esteem.

In 1998, Dr. McIntyre took over as director of Russell Sage's Honors Program. She is eager to work with students to help them reach academic excellence through the Honors Program and RSC's Annual Spring Research Symposium.
