Our Mission

English and Modern Languages focuses on critical and evaluative thinking, analytical and persuasive writing, and linguistic capability in English and foreign languages. Students often combine Education programs with one of the majors. Community service and internship programs encourage students to gain valuable career and personal experience while they are pursuing a degree. Students in all majors in the department have an opportunity to complete a research project or paper during their final year of study.

The Modern Languages program operates three residential language centers as part of its teaching and co-curricular missions to Russell Sage College. Three Victorian brownstones on the Troy Campus, La Casa Espanola (Spanish House), La Maison Francaise (French House), and Das Deutches Haus (German House), have supported the multicultural development of more than three generations of Sage alumnae in all majors.
