"It is critically important," Professor McLeod writes, "that students are able to integrate theory and practice. In nearly all of my classes, students are given exercises that take them outside of the classroom and into the environment they are studying. We routinely tour prisons and jails, attend court proceedings, and volunteer at social agencies. Some courses are necessarily emotionally charged. In Victims and Their Experiences, for example, students have the opportunity to speak with men and women who have lost family members to violent crime or who have been, themselves, the victims of crime."

Professor McLeod is active in a number of professional and community organizations. At the present time she sits on the Executive Board of the Criminal Justice Educators Association of New York State, having served as the association's Presidentfrom 2001-03. She isthe Treasurer of the Town of BethlehemYouth Court and has conduced periodic workshops on youth court evaluation at the National Youth Court Conference. Professor McLeod's research and publishing background covers the areas of criminal justice education, neighborhood watch programs, community policing, domestic violence, victims' rights, and youth courts. She has received major grants form the National Institute of Justice to explore these topics and has been called upon to serve as a consultant with the National Center for Victims of Crime, the Professional Office for Non-Collegiate Sponsored Instruction (PONSI), the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, the Criminal Justice Training Assessment Program, and Excelsior College.
