Morning Sessions 9 am - 12 pm
Raku Ceramics
Raku is a unique and ancient form of pottery-making based on traditional 16th century Japanese techniques. Unlike other firing processes, Raku is fired very quickly at a low temperature. Pieces are removed from the kiln while still glowing hot and placed in a container filled with materials such as sawdust, newspaper or leaves. This creates a smoky environment that produces unpredictable results and individualized glaze formations with intense color. Students will design and construct forms based on hand-building and/or wheel-throwing techniques and participate in making clay and in the exciting firing process. May be taken for college credit by students entering the 11th or 12th grade.
