Now in its 27th year, Sage Summer Art & Design is an exciting, intensive studio art and design program developed for high school students. The dynamic and engaging program provides an opportunity for students interested in visual arts, an opportunity to enhance their skills and expand their horizons in a concentrated fashion - under professional guidance. Studio courses will be offered by faculty who have demonstrated outstanding achievement as both artists and teachers.

All Summer Art & Design classes meet Monday through Friday from 9 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm on the Sage College of Albany campus at 140 New Scotland Avenue. The program is offered to all interested high school students (grades 9-12) who are committed to working under the tutelage of a professional artist for the entire 4 week period.

Summer Art & Design concludes with an exhibition of student work on August 3 from 4-5 pm in the Opalka Gallery. The art show will include an awards ceremony and reception for the students, faculty, parents and guests.

The cost for one course is $625 (half day) and for two courses $975 (full day). Summer art courses taken for college credit are an additional $150 per course taken for credit. Lunch will be provided to full day students.

Morning Sessions 9 am - 12 pm

Raku Ceramics

A studio course in low-temperature ceramics which utilizes quick-firing techniques for porous clay bodies. Students will design and construct forms based on hand-building and/or wheel-throwing techniques and participate in the clay mixing and firing process. Slide lectures and laboratory assignments will augment studio projects. May be taken for college credit by students entering the 11th or 12th grade.

Interior Design

This course is designed to give students interested in Interior design basic skills. Students will develop drafting techniques, board skills, and a variety of drawing techniques which are necessary to communicate and solve interior design problems within the built environment. May be taken for college credit by students entering the 11th or 12th grade.

Beginning Drawing

This introductory course focuses on the language of drawing through the use of black and white media. The student will progress through a series of studio assignments covering line, perspective, value, shape, and texture. The course includes observational drawing, as well as drawing from life. Drawing sessions will take place in the studio and on the campus grounds. This course will focus on creating portfolio quality work for high school students who are considering applying to art school. May be taken for college credit by students entering the 11th or 12th grade.

Graphic Design

An introductory course in which students become familiar with the basic tools, techniques, terminology and materials of the graphic designer. Students will learn to integrate form and message to solve visual communication problems. The design process will be explored through the completion of assigned projects. May be taken for college credit by students entering the 11th or 12th grade.

Afternoon Session 1pm - 4pm

Digital Photography

This course will allow the student to work both as a photographer and as post-production graphic designer to create a variety of portfolio pieces. As photographers, students will learn about the abilities and limitations of their digital cameras. As graphic designers, students will learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to improve their photos and satisfy their creative wishes. This will be a hands-on course - students will take several walking trips around and off campus to photograph the world around them. They will also spend time in the computer lab using their photos to solve graphic design problems. This course will focus on creating portfolio quality work for high school students who are considering applying to art school. It is highly recommended that all students bring his/her own digital camera to this course. May be taken for college credit by students entering the 11th or 12th grade.

Figure Drawing

Figure drawing is an essential skill to any serious art student. Working with both the nude and draped figure, students will apply the concepts of gesture, contour, mass, and color mixing to the human body. Both quick and sustained drawings will be done in charcoal, conte, ink, graphite, white charcoal, brush & ink, pastel and mixed media. Basic Anatomy, rendering, foreshortening and proportion will be covered. Both academic and creative solutions will be encouraged. This course will focus on creating portfolio quality work for high school students who are considering applying to art school.  May be taken for college credit by students entering the 11th or 12th grade.

 Painting & Mixed Media

This studio is designed to introduce, explore, and practice skills and techniques through various exercises. Students will learn the fundamentals of acrylic and water color painting as well as experience the freedom of mixed media. Students will draw, paint and sculpt with art materials as well as found 2-D and 3-D objects and imagery, using acrylic, charcoal, watercolor, newspaper etc to create their original works. This class will also look into art history, placing an emphasis on significant artists, movements and art techniques. This course will focus on creating portfolio quality work for high school students who are considering applying to art school. May be taken for college credit by students entering the 11th or 12th grade.
