Sage Summer College for Kids proudly announces its 16th annual summer program. We are all about learning new things, exploring special interests, making new friends, and always having FUN! We offer exciting, innovative, and engaging classes in a wide spectrum of fields and a format designed to allow students to explore many fields within a one-week program.

Four one-week sessions with classes in both morning and afternoon provide the opportunity to select up to four classes per day. Each week a new selection of classes is available. Held on the Sage College of Albany campus, Summer College for Kids is a welcoming and enriching experience for all children and we hope that you will choose to join us.

CLASSES INCLUDE:

Alternative Golf

Who needs clubs - get outside and explore the world of alternative golf! Fun golf games include soccer golf, Frisbee golf, miniature golf and other exciting variations. Students will use their creativity to design golf courses around the campus, and then play a different variation each day. Indoor courses will be designed in the case of inclement weather.

Card Games

Rummy! Uno! Get ready because in this class, we will be playing a variety of fun card games. Running at the same time will be a special section for players of "Magic: The Card Game."

Cartooning and Comic Strips

Have you ever wondered how famous cartoonists create their comic strips in the Sunday paper? In this class, we will explore cartooning and how to draw all sorts of cartoon characters. By the end of the week, you will have enough comic strips to make your own "funnies" section of the newspaper.

Chess

Explore the mind-boggling game of chess! Pawns, knights, bishops, queens and kings will be under your command as you acquire the skills needed to defeat your opponents. Learn this game of logic, reason and strategy - then play with your friends and challenge a master!

Drawing Anime and Manga for Beginners

This course will explore the world of Japanese Manga cartooning and Anime animation. Students will learn the drawing techniques and develop their skills while creating their own characters.

Engineering Marvels

This new course engages all students with construction and building projects to solve a variety of problems. Working as teams and as individuals, students will design catapults, bridges, and other engineering marvels.

Fantasy Sports

Did you ever want to experience what it's like to own and manage a sports franchise? Draft players, make trades and each day carefully choose your starting line-up then watch your players play. As your team accumulates statistics, you accumulate points. Could you be the next sports dynasty?

Fashion Makeover

Focus on fashion as you explore color, texture, materials! Learn how to mix and match to create your new style for your client. Discover what looks best for different occasions.

Fun with Food

Did you think eating healthy had to be boring and tasteless? Find different types of food that not only help you body but also stimulate your taste buds. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and even dessert will all be covered in this delectable class.

Fun with Painting

Do you love to paint? Do you want an expert's advice on mastering certain techniques? Then this class is for you! Join others as we spend the week using different types of paint to create beautiful pictures.

Game Design

Do you love board games? Here's your chance to design and createa perfect game. Students will make a prototype of their own. Did you know that in 1935, after being rejected by other companies,Parker Brothers released a new game called Monopoly? Since then, approximately 750,000,000 people have played the game - could yours be the next big hit?

Great Animated Movies

Many people have seen the popular movies "Happy Feet" and "Madagascar," but have you heard of "Princess Mononoke" or "Fantasia?" Students will watch the films and then critique them with their classmates.

Great Sports Movies

This course will expose students to three classic sports films that every athlete should see sometime while growing up; "Hoosiers," a film about asmall-town high school basketball team in Indiana that in 1954 defied the odds and went on to win the state championship, "Sandlot," a comedy about baseball and growing up and how the two go so well together, and lastly, "The Karate Kid," the ultimate 80s film that taught the value of diligence, hard work, and respect for your elders.

Harry Potter Fan Club

Do you like Quidditch? How would you like to play in real life? Who's your favorite character Harry, Herimone or Ron? What would you do if you could write the next book? This course is open to all wizards and muggles who want to talk and write about the amazing world of Harry Potter.

Hawaiian Culture

The spirit of Aloha comes to Sage! Hula dancing, cuisine, and crafts will all be sampled in our own Sage Luau!

How To Draw Funny Cartoons

This course will explore the world of funny cartooning. Students will read and study classic funny cartoonists and then learn how to draw like them. Students will use their own comedic skills and creativity to develop their characters and original comic strips!

Indoor/Outdoor Games

Wanna be healthy - be active! In this course, students will learn and play all sorts of timeless,fun active games. Kickball, Hopscotch, Basketball, Simon Says, Wiffle Ball, Capture the Flag and Dodgeballare among the endless possibilities. On sunny days we will be outside, and on rainy days we will be in Sage's full-size gym.

Jewelry

Make creative earrings, rings, necklaces and bracelets, as well as back pack pulls and key chains using a variety of materials. Use color and design to create exotic jewelry for yourself and your friends.

Model Building

If you enjoy working with your hands, this activity is definitely for you! Each student will have a choice of constructing a model car, boat, or plane. Sand down, glue, and paint each replica to make it your own.

Origami

Origami is the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. The goal of this art is to create a given result using geometric folds and crease patterns, preferably without the use of gluing or cutting the paper medium. Students will learn basic techniques so that tehy can create all kinds of cool projects. During the last day of class, we will walk to Ronald McDonald House to donate our cranes.

Pastry Decorating

Learn how to use creativity and your imagination to design and make beautifully decorated goodies! Parties take on a whole new meaning when you're the baker. Oh, it's so sweet!

Pirates of the Caribbean Fan Club

Did you ever want to be a pirate for a week? Based on the Disney movie of the same name, this course will give students the opportunity to pretend they are a bunch of adventure seekers the high seas. This class is all things PIRATE - Arrr!

Recycled Art

Think it's garbage? Think again! They say "one person's trash is another person's treasure." In this course, students will learn clever ways to reuse discarded materials to create beautiful works of art.

Sage on Broadway

Have you ever wanted to sing and act on Broadway? Well now is the time for you to practice. In this class, students will create their own play or musical from costumes to lines to set. On the last day, we will perform our final product!

Sage Idol

Randy, Paula, Simon - get ready! Do you love to sing? Here's your chance! Sing along to karaoke tracks with the chorus or step out and sing lead!

Sage Singers

Do re mi fa so la ti do! If singing is your thing, join our chorus for a week of learning new songs and singing together!

Sage Spa

Experience a week of pampering and natural beauty! Learn to make homemade face masks, hair and scalp cleansers, face toners and hand creams. Practice relaxation techniques, deep breathing, meditation and stretching techniques. Be your best and feel great!

Sage Speedway

NASCAR fans! In this course, students will design race tracks, complete with hairpin turns, obstacles and impediments. They will then compete by racing remote controlled cars around it to try to set the best time. Thrills and fun are guaranteed!

Scrapbooking

Create your own multi-themed scrapbook album! Use beautiful papers, stickers, embellishments and your own photos to preserve memories of your friends, family and good times.

Sign Language

This course will teach the basics of American sign language. Learn to communicate without sound. We will cover the alphabet and common phrases and even learn a song.

So You Think You Can DanceSummer College for Kids 2008, Week 1

Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to move. This course will get students up and dance to todays hits. Students will choreograph their own dances in a different style each day. Learn old dances like the Twist and the Electric Slide and create new ones for the music of tomorrow!

Strategy Games

Give your mind a workout playing all sorts of challenging games. Learn how to play classic games of strategy likeApples to Apples,Battle Ship, Scrabble, Boggle, Othello, Risk, Mancala, Backgammon, Connect Four and more.

Treasure Hunt

Strategize, partner up and have fun. Design your own treasure and create a map that only the clever can decipher. Campers will have access to the entire Sage campus for this adventure, and even GPS units.

Volleyball

Learn the basic skills necessary to dominate at your next family part. Sets, passes, digs, and kills will be practiced before we get into the essential team building and strategies necessary to defeat all opponents.
