Now in its 23rd year, Sage Summer Art & Design is an exciting, intensive studio art and design program developed for high school students by Sage College of Albany, one of The Sage Colleges. The dynamic and engaging program provides an opportunity for students interested in visual arts to work on skills and projects in an intense and concentrated way and to explore new areas of art.
Studio courses will be offered by a faculty who have demonstrated outstanding achievement as both artists and teachers.
All Summer Art & Design classes meet Monday through Friday from 9 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm on the Sage College of Albany campus at 140 New Scotland Avenue. Special programs include visiting artists, outdoor sketching trips, and tours of museums and galleries.
The program is open to all interested high school students in grades 9-12 who are committed to sustaining creative work under the tutelage of a professional artist for the entire four-week period.
Summer Art & Design concludes with an exhibition of student work on July 31, 2009 from 4-5 pm in the Opalka Gallery. The art show will include an awards ceremony and reception for the students, faculty and guests. Students will receive a Certificate of Completion upon successful completion of the program.

Digital Photography & Advertising
This course will allow the student to work both as a photographer and as postproduction graphic designer to create a variety of portfolio pieces. As photographers, students will learn about the abilities and limitations of their digital cameras. As graphic designers, students will learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to improve their photos and satisfy their creative wishes. This will be a hands-on course - students will take several walking trips around and off campus to photograph the world around them. They will also spend time in the computer lab using their photos to solve graphic design problems. This course will focus on creating portfolio quality work for high school students who are considering applying to art school. It is highly recommended that all students bring his/her own digital camera to this course.

This course, designed to introduce and develop technical abilities, as well as drawing and creative skills in fine art, through fashion design, will emphasize creative effort and practice through diverse media and artistic approaches and processes. Students will work from the live model through observation, designing and dressing the figure while studying history and trends, as well as utilizing pattern and fabrics to develop casual and evening wear clothes lines and accessories. This course will focus on creating portfolio quality work for high school students who are considering applying to art school.

This introductory course focuses on the language of drawing through the use of black and white media. The student will progress through a series of studio assignments covering line, perspective, value, shape, and texture. Drawing sessions will take place in the studio and on the campus grounds. This course will focus on creating portfolio quality work for high school students who are considering applying to art school. May be taken for college credit by students entering the 11th or 12th grade.

Graphic Story Telling and Sequential Art
This course will focus on telling a story with pictures and will cover the process from story conception and development to layouts and character design through a finished project. Students will create original stories and characters to use in their choice of medium including comic strips, graphic novels, and short animation. The end result will be a work that will be portfolio quality for those students applying to art school.

Afternoon Session: 1 - 4 pm
This course will introduce students to the world of filmmaking through hands on experience and the study of great films. Students will work with digital cameras, iMovie, and Adobe Creative Suite software to learn the fundamentals of filmmaking. They will get hands-on experience in directing, writing, editing, acting, cinematography, and production. Students will work in small groups to make their films, giving them the opportunity to fulfill each of the basic crew positions as well as write, direct and edit their own short film. Students will also watch and discuss great films to better understand the history of film. This course will focus on creating portfolio quality work for high school students who are considering applying to art school. This course may be taken for college credit by students entering the 11th or 12th grade

Figure drawing is an essential skill to any serious art student. Working with both the nude and draped figure, students will apply the concepts of gesture, contour, mass, and color mixing to the human body. Both quick and sustained drawings will be done in charcoal, conte, ink, graphite, white charcoal, brush & ink, pastel and mixed media. Basic Anatomy, rendering, foreshortening and proportion will be covered. Both academic and creative solutions will be encouraged. This course will focus on creating portfolio quality work for high school students who are considering applying to art school. This course may be taken for college credit by students entering the 11th or 12th grade

This studio is designed to introduce, explore, and practice the skills and techniques of Interior Design through various exercises. Interior Design is a growing field that combines interest in form, fashion, color, style and design to change the environment we live in. Students will learn how to improve their drawing, color theory and computer skills. Each student will be given his or her own space to redesign and using their new skills they will create a full client presentation package. This course will focus on creating portfolio quality work for high school students who are considering applying to art school.

This studio is designed to introduce, explore, and practice skills and techniques through various exercises. Students will learn the fundamentals of acrylic and water color painting as well as experience the freedom of mixed media. Students will draw, paint and sculpt with art materials as well as found 2-D and 3-D objects and imagery, using acrylic, charcoal, watercolor, newspaper etc to create their original works. This class will also look into art history, placing an emphasis on significant artists, movements and art techniques. This course will focus on creating portfolio quality work for high school students who are considering applying to art school.

This one-week portfolio preparation class is designed to give students the competitive edge they need when applying to art colleges. Taught by Jean Dahlgren, the Program Coordinator for Graphic Design at the Sage College of Albany, the course will teach students how to create a winning portfolio designed to impress both college admissions offices and art department faculty. Visiting artists will speak to students about what should be in portfolios in the morning. Afternoons will consist of critiques of student work and demonstrations of proper techniques for matting, repairing, and completing artwork. The program will run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm the week of August 3. The cost of this class is $270 and includes lunch and some supplies.
