Sage Summer College for Kids proudly announces its 15th annual summer program, where it’s never too early to learn about new fields, explore special interests, make new friends and have FUN! Students can choose from exciting, innovative, and engaging classes in art, music, science, English language arts, theater, team building, cooking, forensic science, political science, mathematics, sports, theater, chorus, science, history, and chess.

Four one-week sessions with classes in both morning and afternoon provide students with the opportunity to select up to four classes per day. Each week a new selection of classes is available. Held on the Albany Campus of The Sage Colleges, Summer College for Kids integrates classes in a college setting that is both modern and inviting!

CLASSES INCLUDE:

Alternative Golf

Who needs clubs - get outside and explore the world of alternative golf! Fun golf games include soccer golf, Frisbee golf, miniature golf and other exciting variations. Students will use their creativity to design golf courses around the campus, and then play a different variation each day.

Cake Decorating

Learn how to use cooking skills, ingredients, creativity, and your imagination to design and make beautifully decorated cakes! Parties take on a whole new meaning when you’re the baker. Oh, it’s so sweet!

CatapultSummer College for Kids 2008, Week 1

A castle is no match for a good catapult. In this course, students will learn how a catapult works while they make their own small working model, then as a group, they will make a large functional catapult and launch water balloons across campus!

Chess

Explore the mind-boggling game of chess! Pawns, knights, bishops, queens and kings will be under your command as you acquire the skills needed to defeat your opponents. Learn this game of logic, reason and strategy – then play with your friends and challenge a master!

CSI

Can you put the pieces together to catch a bad guy? Learn forensic science skills that uncover clues. Conduct hands-on forensic tests on evidence found at the "crime scene" and conduct interviews of suspects. Finally, make the arrest when the bad guy is caught!

Fantasy Sports

Did you ever want to experience what its like to own and manage a sports franchise. Draft players, make trades and each day carefully choose your starting line-up – then watch your players play. As your team accumulates statistics, you accumulate points. Could you be the next sports dynasty?

Fashion Designer

Ever dream of competing on TV’s Project Runway. This course will teach students all about the artistic side of fashion design. Students will dream up new fashions and then learn how to draw them on the figure. Topics will include figure drawing, an investigation into fabrics, accessories, color and fit.

Fashion Makeover

Focus on fashion as you explore color, texture, materials and accessories. Learn how to mix and match to create your new style. Discover what looks best on you. Don't be a slave to fashion trends. Instead, be a fashion maven, create your own styles - even put on a fashion show at the end of the week!!

Game Design

Do you love board games? Card games? Strategy games? Here’s your chance to design and create the perfect game. Students will make a prototype of the perfect game. Did you know that in 1935, the Parker Brothers company released a new game called Monopoly. Since then, approximately 750,000,000 people have played the game - could yours be the next big hit?

Geocaching

It's the latest craze to hit the shores of America. Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the students use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere on the Sage campus. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and "treasure," usually toys or trinkets of little value. Great Animated Movies

Everyone has seen the Lion King, Little Nemo and Happy Feet. This course will expose students to other great animated films such as Disney’s 1940 classic “Fantasia”, the great 2001 Japanese film “Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi)” and the 1977 J.R.R. Tolkien masterpiece, “The Hobbit”. Students will critique the movies, and learn about the animation process.

Great Fantasy Movies

Fantasy movies provides us with the chance to escape reality for a couple of hours. In this course, we will watch three classic movies; 1939’s beloved “The Wizard of Oz”, the original 1971 version of “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” and 1984’s blockbuster “Ghostbusters”. Students will critique the movies, and learn about the fantasy genre.

Great Science Fiction Movies

Everyone has seen the “Star Wars”, “The Lord of the Rings” and “Transformers”. This course will expose students to other great science fiction films such as Steven Spielberg’s 1978 classic, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, 1985’s underrated,“Enemy Mine”, and Disney’s brilliant special effects masterpiece “Tron”. Students will critique the movies, and learn about the science fiction genre.

Great Sports Movies

This course will expose students to three classic sports films that every athlete should see sometime while they’re growing up; “Hoosiers”, a film about a little town high school basketball team in Indiana that in 1954 defied the odds and went on to win the state championship, “Sandlot”, a comedy about baseball and growing up and how the two go so well together, and lastly, “The Karate Kid”, the ultimate 80s film that taught the value of diligence, hard work and respect for your elders.

Harry Potter Fan Club

Do you like Quidditch! Who's your favorite character Harry, Herimone or Ron? Who would you like to see come back to life Dumbledore, Sirius, Lily or Snape? What would you do if you could write the next book? This course is open to all wizards and muggles who want to talk and write about the amazing world of Harry Potter.

Hip Hop Poetry

A thesaurus isn’t a dinosaur – it’s a rapper’s best friend. In this course students will study the poetry found in rap lyrics and learn how to write their own. They will practice their rhymes over pre-programmed beats to learn about alliteration, cadence, rhyme scheme and figurative language.

How To Draw Funny Cartoons

This course will explore the world of funny cartooning. Students will read and study classic funny cartoonists – and then learn how to draw like them. Students will use their own comedic skills and creativity to develop their characters and original comic strips!

How To Draw Manga and Anime Style!

This course will explore the world of Japanese Manga cartooning and Anime animation. Students will learn about Japanese Manga and Anime style – where it came from and how to do it. Students will learn drawing techniques and develop their skills while creating their own characters.

How To Draw Super Hero Cartoons

Batman, Superman, the Hulk, Spiderman, Iron Man, The Fantastic Four and more! This course will teach students all about the history of the Marvel and DC super hero universe and how to draw it!

Indoor/Outdoor Games

Wanna be healthy - be active! In this course, students will learn and play all sorts of fun active games. Kickball, Hopscotch, Double Dutch, Basketball, Red Light Green Light, Simon Says, Wiffle Ball and Run the Bases, are just some of the games we can play. On sunny days we will be outside, and on rainy days we will be in Sage's full-size gym.

Jewelry

Make creative earrings, rings, necklaces and bracelets, as well as back pack pulls and key chains using a variety of beads, wire and hemp. Use color and design to create exotic jewelry for yourself and your friends. Let your imagination take over as you design wonderful baubles and bangles to wear and give away.

Magic the Card Game

Magic: The Gathering is a collectible card game created by mathematics professor Richard Garfield and introduced in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast. Magic is the first example of the modern collectible card game genre and still thrives today, with an estimated six million players in over seventy countries. Each game represents a battle between powerful wizards who use the magical spells, items, and fantastic creatures depicted on individual Magic cards to defeat their opponents. Magic can be played by two or more players each using a deck of printed cards.

Nature Scavenger Hunt

Could you find a Japanese Maple leaf? How about a beatle from the Coccinellidae family? In this course students will search the campus far and wide to find as many items from the master scavenger list as possible.

Op Art!

Summer College for Kids 2008, Week 1"Op" for optical, as in optical illusion, this course will introduce students to the work of Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely and others working in the op art style. Students will create Op art works of their own design - mazes, illusions, hidden images, and other visual effects. Students will work in color and black and white, learning color theory and composition.

Origami

Origami, from ori meaning "folding", and kami meaning "paper", is the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. The goal of this art is to create a given result using geometric folds and crease patterns, preferably without the use of gluing or cutting the paper medium.

Students will learn basic techniques so that they can create all kinds of cool projects.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Did you ever want to be a pirate for a week? Have you ever participated in the International Talk like a Pirate Day at your school? Based on the Disney movie of the same name, this course will give students the opportunity to pretend they are a bunch of adventure seekers the high seas. If they can figure out the clues on the treasure map and navigate correctly they just might get rich.

Recycled Art

Wanted: young artists who want to help save the planet. They say “one person’s trash, is another person’s treasure”. In this course, students will learn clever ways to reuse discarded materials to create beautiful works of art.

Rhythm Line

Excitement, energy, and inspiration are the soul of this class. Students will learn to appreciate the passion and inspiration of percussion and to experience the joy of rhythm and the fun of creating music In this exciting class. Everyone will get to play in the groove to create a "universal language" of music.

Rock & Roll Design

Your favorite rock & roll band has hired you to design their new line of band merchandise. It will be up to you to design the tour shirts, a band poster, the band’s wardrobe, the stage design and the cover for their soon to be released new album. Students will learn how to make their band stand out from the rest with innovative new ideas and products!

Sage Spa

Experience a week of pampering and natural beauty! Learn to make homemade face masks, hair and scalp cleansers, face toners and hand creams. Practice relaxation techniques, deep breathing, meditation and stretching techniques. Be your best and feel great!

Sage Idol

Randy, Paula, Simon look out! Do you love to sing? Here's your chance! Sing along to karaoke tracks through a full pa system. Sing in the chorus or step out and sing lead!

Sage Speedway

Nascar fans! In this course, each day students will design a race track, complete with hairpin turns, obstacles and jumps. They will then compete with each other by racing remote controlled cars around it. Thrills and fun are guaranteed in this exciting new course!

Scrapbooking

Create your own multi-themed scrapbook album! Use beautiful papers, stickers, embellishments and your own photos to preserve memories of your friends, family and good times.

Sign Language

This course will teach the basics of American sign language. Learn to communicate without sound. We will cover the alphabet and common phrases.

So You Think You Can DanceSummer College for Kids 2008, Week 1

Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to move. This course will get students up and dance to today’s hits. Students will choreograph their own dances in a different style each day. Learn old dances like the Twist and the Electric Slide and create new ones for the music of tomorrow!

Social Art

The world keeps changing around us, and artists are often challenged to create work that reflects this change. In the course, students will take their inspiration from the state of the world around them to create mixed media works of art that say something about the society they live in!

Strategy Games

Give your mind a workout playing all sorts of challenging games. Learn how to play classic games of strategy like Stratego, Battle Ship, Scrabble, Boggle, Othello, Risk, Mancala, Backgammon, Connect Four and more.

Theatrical Make-up

Ever wanted to look like one of those actors on the big stage? This course will explore a variety of make-up tricks and tips that enable actors to come alive as characters.

Watercolor

Create a beautiful outdoor landscape of your very own. Go outside and draw a beautiful landscape, and then fill it with lush watercolors. This class will explore working with darks and lights, the importance of overlapping, detail, angled lines and color in creating a dramatic work of art. No drawing or painting experience necessary!
