Admission
First-year students interested in applying to the Visual Arts program at Sage must submit:
- A completed Application for Admission
- An official high school transcript or an official copy of a GED score
- A letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor
- Official scores from either the SAT or ACT exams
(Transfer students also need transcripts from the college(s) they attended.)
In addition, students must schedule an art portfolio review. (To arrange a review, call 518-292-1730.)
Portfolio Requirements for incoming freshman
For admission into the Visual Arts Department students must present a portfolio of original work. This portfolio should include art and design work completed in classes and independently. We recommend you include 12-15 pieces of your best quality work that shows your range of abilities and creativity. Include your sketchbook (if you have one) so that we can see your own ideas as well as how your perform when given studio assignments.
Portfolio Requirements for transfer students
Fine Arts Portfolio Requirements
Submit a variety of 12 – 15 of your best works from your freshmen and sophomore years. Of the 12 –15 pieces, include 2 –3 paintings, 2 –3 ceramics, and 2 –3 prints. All drawings, 2-D designs, and prints should be matted or mounted. All 3-D design pieces can be either 35 mm slide or photo print format.
Graphic Design Portfolio Requirements
You should include representative examples, 2 to 3 pieces, of studio class work. Include typography drawing and drawing and design pieces. Work should be professionally presented. A total of 12-15 pieces are sufficient, only web or interactive design work may be submitted electronically.
Photography Portfolio Requirements
In addition to a variety of examples of work from fine arts foundation courses (3-5 pieces); student photography work should consist of 10 photographic images which demonstrate a variety of processes and techniques.

In addition to a variety of examples of work from fine arts foundation courses (3-5 pieces),
The portfolio should demonstrate skills in the following areas: the use and application of color CAD drafting, space planning, coordination and selection of finishes and presentation techniques.
