Sage offers a Master of Arts in Teaching degree for students who wish to pursue a career in teaching K-12 art. The M.A.T. for Art Education leads to New York state certification in art education. Candidates may complete the thirty credit program in one fulltime year or two years of part-time study.
The program includes art content courses which integrate art history, art criticism, aesthetics, multiculturalism and art making with art teaching. Candidates improve their skills in all areas while applying their knowledge to the art classroom. Pedagogy, methods and research are taught through education courses. Candidates put their knowledge into practice through internships and student teaching experiences in area schools.
Candidates for the M.A.T. are expected to have an undergraduate degree in visual art or art history. An admission portfolio is required for acceptance into the program. This portfolio should include a minimum of 12 works which demonstrate competence in a variety of mediums and evidence of advanced work.
