What We Do
The Allies Center provides a wide range of activities and serves as a clearinghouse in the following ways:
- The Women Changing the World Speaker Series co-sponsored with the Helen M. Upton Center for Women's Studies, features dynamic women who have made a difference in the way we perceive the world. Past speakers include Marcia Gillespie, editor of MS. Magazine; Angela Davis, Professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz; Byllye Avery, Founder and Director of the National Black Women's Health Project; and Anita Roddick, OBE, Founder of The Body Shop.
- Artists for Social Justice Concert, an annual variety show held in partnership with the YWCA's Week Without Violence and Take Back the Night march. Organized in cooperation with the World 420 courses and features both student and local talent. (Fall)
- The annual Social Responsibility Fair, an educational gathering of students, faculty, organizations and businesses providing exhibits concerning the practice of social responsibility in the local and global community. Organized in cooperation with the World 420 course, the BCC Students for Social Responsibility, and the Helen M. Upton Center for Women's Studies. (Spring)
- Allies Workshops focus on issues of social responsibility and diversity.
- The Allies Film Series features notable social change and social justice movies.
- Delegations to study social responsibility in a variety of off-campus sites.
- Conflict Education & Mediation Training are facilitated by The Allies Conflict Mediation and Education Center.
- The Allies Many Cultures Dinner Dance is an event that celebrates various cultures from around the world through food, music and games.
- The Women of Distinction Luncheon honors Business and Communication students' leadership and success. This year's event features speaker Audry Russo, Vice President of Operations for MAYA.
