The Academy for Character Education at the Sage Colleges is holding its 8th Annual Northeast United States Conference on Character Education. This year's theme is "Not in MY School: Strategies for Preventing Violent Behavior and Academic Under Performance." The focus of presentations will be on “Researched based strategies to impact Civility, Culture and Academics.” In the past the conference has been “loaded with take home ideas for classroom application.” This year participants will attend four breakout sessions and two keynote addresses.

This popular conference attracts teachers, administrators and community group leaders from throughout our state and far beyond. Presenter Proposals have already been received from California, North Carolina and New Jersey and Connecticut as well as from school districts throughout New York State, including several by Natioal Schools of Character Award winning schools.

This year’s dynamic keynote speakers are:

  • Akua Goodrich, co-founder of the Power Unit for Motivating Youth
  • Michael Mann from the National Institute on Media and Family

Akua is a writer, poet and dynamic speaker who feels it is her responsibility to remain connected to our youth, the community and the world. Akua is recipient of the 2000 MTV Local Heroes Award and the Syracuse University Soul of Syracuse Award. Her presentation, “From Perception to Promise: Four Key Strategies for Educators”, will focus upon recognizing and valuing their gifts and strengths as key factors in helping students to build, maintain and promote character at every level of development.

Michael is an award-winning storyteller, author, training consultant and speaker. Comments following a recent keynote given at the Midwest School Violence Prevention Conference include “The presentation was awesome” and “As an educator myself, Michael Mann is right on. We battle disrespect and bullying so often and it probably has a great deal to do with the media.” His presentation is “The Forgotten Dimension of Character Education: Creating Media Wise Kids".
