In honor of her 40th RSC class reunion

Ms. Lynne Shapiro donated a collection of documents from her work with the New York Radical Feminist organization. Ms. Shapiro is pictured in front of her donation on Reunion Weekend 2008. The NYRF documents are now available in the Upton Center library for students and faculty interested in doing research on this organization.

Womens Studies Human Trafficking Workshop human trafficking
On February 5, 2008 students met in Bush Memorial Hall for a workshop designed to raise awareness of human trafficking. Sr. Kathleen Pritty, Justice Coordinator of Mercy East and Sr. Mary Hartnett, Sage Faculty member faciliated discussion and reflection on a film documenting the selling of human lives. Participants were also updated on recent legislative decisions regarding human trafficking.

Mars and Venus, or Planet Earth: Women and Men in the New Millennium ~ A Valentine's Day Lecture

It was standing room only on Feb. 14, as students packed the Upton Center to hear Dr. Michael Kimmel, Professor of Sociology at SUNY Stony Brook and National Spokesperson for the National Organization for Men Against Sexism explain why men should support gender equality. Author and editor of more than twenty books on gender issues including The Gendered Society, Against the Tide: Pro-Feminist Men in the United States, 1776-1990, Manhood in America and the forthcoming book, Guyland: The Inner Lives of Young Men, 18-26, Dr. Kimmels lecture covered a wide range of topics in gender relations including: gender identity, love, friendship, work & family, parenting and sexuality. Sponsored by The Helen M. Upton Center for Womens Studies, The Office of Cultural Enrichment & Diversity, and The Allies Center for the Study of Social Responsibility.

Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters:
The Frightening New Normalcy of Hating Your BodyOn March 6, 2008, Courtney E. Martin, a widely-read freelance journalist, blogger and award winning author of Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters: The Frightening New Normalcy of Hating Your Body gave the Women's History Month Convocation lecture. Her lecture focused on the women's issues of perfectionism and body image.

Eve's Quest Trivia Game eve's quest
On March 26, 2008 students, faculty, and staff competed for the title of "Diva" as they tested their knowledge of Women's History with Eve's Quest. This board game focuses broadly on women, from Mother Teresa to Mother Goose, Barbie to Body Shop, PMS to Title IX, Queen Latifah to Queen Victoria. Players earned Hall Wars points and great prizes!!

On April 2, 2008 students and faculty met with Gloria Steinem at the Legislative Office Building in Albany and attended the NYS Pay Equity Day events.

On April 12, 2007, Debra Dickerson, Upton Scholar in Residence, moderated a panel on Community Activism. The panel composed of Barbara Smith, Albany Common Councilperson 4th Ward; Elizabeth Dedrick, Working Families Party Campaign Manager for David Soares; Lillian Moy, Executive Director of the Legal Aid Society of NENY; Amanda Paeglow, Community Prosecution Coordinator for the Albany County District Attorney's Office; discussed what it takes to make change in our community.
