24 Hours of Climate Reality
Sage Hosts 24 Hours of Reality
The Sage Colleges will host a unique 24 hour global climate-themed event beginning Wednesday, September 14 at 8:00 pm continuing uninterrupted through September 15 at 8:00 pm in Buchman Pavilion on the Troy campus.
24 Hours of Reality, part of a worldwide campaign organized by The Climate Reality Project (formerly the Alliance for Climate Protection) is designed to heighten awareness of the reality of the climate crisis and to mobilize citizens to help solve it.
The campaign kicks off with the viewing of 24 Hours of Reality, a worldwide, live streamed event featuring scientists, celebrities, business leaders and concerned citizens, along with former Vice President Al Gore, broadcasting live from 24 global locations in 24 time zones in multiple languages all sharing one message about the impact of living with climate change. 24 Hours of Reality will be screened at the Capital Region’s “Climate Central” in Sage’s Buchman Pavilion in Troy beginning at 8:00 pm September 14. In addition to viewing the live streamed event, Sage will provide 24 hours of climate-themed films, refreshments, activities and additional opportunities for activism.
During the 24 Hours of Reality event, people all around the globe living with the impact
of climate change will connect the dots between recent extreme weather events – including floods, droughts and storms – and the man made pollution that is changing our climate.
“The climate crisis knows no political boundaries. Ferocious storms and deadly heat waves are occurring with alarming frequency all over the world. We are living with the reality of the climate crisis every day. The only question is, how soon can we act?” said Vice President Gore.
Professor Leibo of the Sage Climate Crisis Center adds, “I hope everyone will take the best lessons from the Capital Region’s recent encounter with Irene, that we are far more vulnerable to catastrophic weather than we have imagined and that the findings of the international climate science community warn us that events such as Irene are likely to be more common in our future. Now is the time to act against such threats.”
The 24 Hours of Reality event will feature a new multimedia presentation created by Vice President Gore, on the connections between extreme weather events and the climate crisis. All viewers of the event, online and in person, will be invited to take part in specific activities to help solve the climate crisis.
The live streamed broadcast is organized by The Climate Reality Project, a new name for Vice President Gore’s nonprofit organization, the Alliance for Climate Protection. Since it was founded, the Alliance has organized more than 5 million members and supporters, while building powerful campaigns such as Repower America and the WE Campaign. The new campaign will incorporate the more than 3,000 activists of The Climate Project who have been personally trained by Vice President Gore, including Sage’s Dr. Steven Leibo, professor of Modern International History and Politics and head of the Sage Climate Crisis Center.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information including a schedule for the film series, please visit: www.sage.edu/climaterealityproject .
