Sage Goes Red for Women February 14, 2012

Heart disease takes the lives of over half a million Americans every year. This devastating epidemic leaves no one untouched; its victims are fathers and daughters, grandparents and siblings and dear friends.

Every February, organizations like the American Heart Association, the CDC and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute team up to remind us that heart disease is still the number one cause of death in the United States.

On Tuesday, February 14th The Sage Colleges will GO RED in recognition of Heart Month.  Activities are planned to bring awareness to the risk factors of heart disease.  While genetics and heredity play a part there are actions we can take to reduce our risk.  Make nutritious meal choices, maintain a healthy weight, move and be active, and know your numbers.

Did you know...

Cardiovascular disease kills approximately 450,000 women each year, about one every minute.

While 1 in 30 American women die of breast cancer, about 1 in 3 die from cardiovascular disease.

More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.

Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.

Only 1 in 5 women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat.

Heart disease is largely preventable. In fact, 80 percent of cardiac events in women may be prevented if women make the right choices for their hearts, involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking.

Sage Goes Red on February 5, 2010

To increase awareness about women's heart health and to inspire action to prevent heart disease, on February 5, 2010 The Sage Colleges decided to Go Red for Women!

Go Red for Women is the American Heart Associations solution to save women's lives. Too many women die each year because they are unaware that heart disease is their No. 1 killer. One in three women dies of this largely preventable disease that's almost one woman every minute.

Members of the Sage community participated in this national movement by wearing red on National Wear Red Day. Additionally, Sage students, faculty and staff gathered on the steps of Bush Memorial Hall to form a living heart ... showing that Sage has "Heart!"

Sage Goes Red

Go Red Fairs were held on both the Albany and Troy campuses providing free blood pressure checks, body mass index checks and cholesterol screenings. Nutrition counseling, heart health literature and Mary Kay representatives were also on hand. Sodexo, the campus food service provider, served heart healthy meals all day. Go Red pins were available with all proceeds benefitting the American Heart Association. Sage Go Red t-shirts were also available for purchase.

Although billed as Go Red for Women - men were invited to participate as well - and did so!
