MLK Day of Service 2010

On January 18, 2010, Sage students, faculty and staff offered community service at several locations in honor of Martin Luther King Day. Approximately 80 members of the Sage community volunteered to prepare and serve meals in soup kitchens, and to stock shelves and pack boxes of food at the Food Bank. Sites included:

 - Bethany Hospitality Center in Troy
 - Northeast Regional Food Bank in Latham
 - St. Maxamillion Kobe Interfaith Soup Kitchen in Albany at the Holy Family Parish

Dr. Andor Skotnes (Troy) and Professor Michael Bienkowski (Albany) offered opening remarks during the continental breakfast leading up to the volunteer opportunities. They spoke about the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and his belief in community service which in turn would bring unity and compassion between peoples.

"Martin Luther King Jr. taught that through nonviolence and service to one another, problems such as hunger and homelessness, prejudice and discrimination can be overcome."

MLK Day: Why Serve?

This day of service was developed and organized by Sage's MLK committee including: Sabrina McGinty, Vincent Porfirio, Michael Duignan (Student Development and Campus Programming SCA), Kristen Wohlgemuth, Pat Roberts, and Diane Angrisano (Student Development and Campus Programming RSC). RSC and SCA Student Government offered financial assistance with this event.

Sodexo, Sage's food service provider, and some of their distributors were underwriters for the lunch served at St. Maximilian's Soup Kitchen.

Members of the MLK planning committee hope to double the number of volunteers for the MLK Day of service planned for next year.
