Study Abroad Considerations

Your decision to study in another country is an important choice, and early planning and careful consideration are essential. Once you have decided you would like to study abroad, schedule and appointment to meet with the Office of Cultural Enrichment and Diversity to begin the planning process. When planning your Study Abroad experience, you will need to consider:

  • Region: Think about where you want to live, study, and your language ability.
  • Types of program: Decide on the foreign university or programs that offer the type of courses you are interested. You can choose from Sage faculty sponsored programs (currently: Jamaica, Puerto Rico, England, Paris, Europe, Rome and Vietnam), Sage sponsored programs (Spain and People's Republic of China) or Sage affiliated/consortium agreement, such as the program with the University at Albany.
  • Length of stay: Decide how long you want to stay abroad -- one semester, summer, or an entire academic year.
  • Field of study and courses: Discuss your choice with your academic adviser. For some programs the ideal year to plan a study abroad experience is your junior year, while for others it might be sophomore or senior year.
  • Eligibility: Study Abroad programs are open to all full-time students who are in good academic standing (generally, a GPA of 2.5 or better depending on the program).
  • Cost and approvals: Do your research, get the necessary approval from your adviser and the College, and make sure you will have the money you need to finance the experience.
