Essay #3

Choose ONE and only one of the following questions. Answer it in a complete and thoughtful
essay. Your essay should be a well-developed, clear, logical and complete idea developed from a
definite thesis statement. Use the text in all instances to support your answer, but do not merely
summarize plot. Refer to specifics in the text. Your paper should be 4-6 pages in length.

Essays must be either typed on a typewriter or printed from a computer. This paper is due on
Wednesday, April 5. Papers handed in late will receive a one grade deduction for each day/class
late. I will be happy to look at drafts. In fact, I encourage you to come in with a draft and/or send
e-mail with questions.

Read the questions carefully. Support all answers with examples from the text.

     1) In Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, does Malvolio "get what's coming to him" at the end of the
play? Is what happens to him fair? Why or why not? Use the text, but do not merely
     summarize plot.

     2) Discuss the topics of fate and fortune in Twelfth Night. You might consider consulting an
online full-text of the play in order to search for words such as "fate," "fortune," "time,"
and others. You may find such a text at
     http://tech-two.mit.edu/Shakespeare/Comedy/twelfthnight/twelfthnight.all.html
Use the text, but do not merely summarize plot.

     3) You are staging a performance of Twelfth Night in New York City, and you are responsible
for casting the play. Write an essay in which you convince the producers of the play that
the cast you have selected would be appropriate and why. Do not use any of the actors
who appear in the version we watched in class.
