Hum 351: Film and Film Theory
Spring 1998
Mr. David A. Salomon
Review Guidelines

Congratulations! You are the Film Critic for the New York Times. Other than the fact that you
are not going to be paid for your new job, you have a fairly cushy job: you see movies for free in
plush movie theaters, and all you have to do is write reviews.

Using one of the first five films we see this semester, write a review,   la the New York Times. To
help guide you, several film reviews from the Times have been placed on reserve in the library; see
Bente. You can also look in almost any issue of the daily NY Times for sample reviews, but you
should not consult the Times review for the film upon which you are writing. The format for your
review should emulate those that you see in the Times. Give the full title, credits, etc. Then write
a review of no less than 500 words and no more than 1000 words. The review should explain,
briefly, the plot of the film, and comment on any remarkable aspects as you see fit. Write your
review as if you are recommending (or not recommending) the film to your peers.

This assignment is due Wednesday, February 25. No late papers will be accepted for this
assignment.

You may choose from any of the following films for your review:
"City Lights"
"Chaplin"
"Wings of Desire"
"Beauty and the Beast" (Cocteau)
"Beauty and the Beast" (Disney)
