Award Funds

Ackerman Award Fund
Established by Trustee Albert C. Ackerman and married to Helen Bruce Ackerman Clemes for the Ackerman Award for Academic Achievement, the Theresa Ackerman Memorial Award for Academic Achievement and the Helen Ackerman Award in Nursing.
Olga Andruskiw Award Fund
Established in 1985 by Nursing Department Chair, Dr. Olga Andruskiw, from money she received upon her retirement. The award is presented to a senior nursing student who is a leader and a scholar and is qualified to study on a graduate level.
American Society of Women Accountants Business Department Prize Fund
Established by the American Society of Women Accountants this award is presented to the graduating woman showing the most promise in accounting.
Bellevue Hospital Nursing Achievement Award Fund
Established in 1987 by Dr. Grace Jorgensen RSC '50 in honor of Bellevue Hospital which her mother founded. The award is presented to nursing students who demonstrate academic and personal excellence, interest in women's health, promise of contributing to health related professions, and interest in working cooperatively.
Bhatt Award Fund
Established in 1980 in memory of Sage faculty member Ben (Banshi) Bhatt for an outstanding senior majoring in biology with preference to the student with the highest grade point average.
Johnny F. Black, Jr., SCA 2004 Award Fund
Established in 2004 by Shelly Goldman Black in honor of her husband, Johnny F. Black, Jr. SCA '04. It is awarded annually to a Sage College of Albany student enrolled in the Computer Network and Systems Administration major who has shown superior coursework.
Chemistry Majors of the Class of 1965 Award Fund Given in Memory of Grace I. VanDervoort Fund
Given annually since 1966 and endowed by the Class of 1965 donors in 1993 for a non-chemistry major enrolled in an advanced course in chemistry.
Cogswell Award Fund
Established in 1985 by Arnold Cogswell for a senior who has made a significant impact on the quality of life at Sage and to the Sage community.
Marion Eldon Dollard Prize Fund
Established by Marion Eldon Dollard RSC '20 for a rising senior who demonstrates the greatest potential for achievement in the field of business.
Virginia Earles Research Award Fund
Named for former faculty member Dr. Virginia Earles and awarded to graduate nursing students for research which contributes to advancing the science of nursing.
Tara M. Espinosa , RSC '01, SGS '02 Memorial Award for Outstanding Graduate in Occupational Therapy Fund
Established in 2004 by Ruth G. Espinosa-Barone in loving memory of her daughter Tara RSC '01 SGS '02 who passed away from a rare disease (EDS). The award is given annually to an occupational therapy student based on GPA, investment in the OT program and OT field, initiatives and enthusiasm displayed, and class leadership.
Evans Award for Leadership Fund
Awarded annually by Trustee Edwin C. Evans and then his wife, Renette Evans, the award was endowed in 2000 for a sophomore showing leadership qualities.
Ruth C. Eyres Award for Excellence in Marketing and Management Fund
Established in 1989 by faculty member Ruth C. Eyres for excellence in any business area.
Kathryn Gale Award in Music Fund
Originally given each year by Alfred Gale in memory of his youngest sister, Kathryn, and endowed in 2000 by his daughter, Miss Jane Gale RSC '48 for individuals showing superior work in music.
Martin J. Gieschen Fund for Sage JCA Art Students
Established by Ann E. Gieschen, widow of Fine Arts Department Chair Martin J. Gieschen for the purchase of books and art supplies for first or second year art students at SCA who demonstrate financial need and dedication to his/her work.
Louis H. Gross Award in Physical Therapy Fund
Established by Louis H. Gross for an outstanding Sage senior who has been accepted into The Sage Colleges graduate physical therapy program.
Kathleen Harrington Memorial Award Fund
Established by John Curran, and his son Mark, in memory of his cousin Kathleen Harrington RSC '70 who died of cancer in 1992. Kathleen was a pioneer in many ways and, having developed Hodgkin's disease while at college, allowed herself to be a guinea pig for new treatments for the disease. It is awarded to undergraduate students intending to complete graduate studies in PT, with preference to students from Troy or Rensselaer County who demonstrate commitment to health and wellness, a love of running, a strong motivation for professional practice in the area of work hardening, sports medicine or PT practice in acute care settings.
Arnold S. Harris Award Fund
Established in 1990 by the Department of Political Science and Public Administration in memory of faculty member Arnold S. Harris for his commitment to Sage students and his outstanding service to Troy.  It is awarded to either political science or public administration majors who show a particular interest in state or local government.
Frances P. Healy Award Fund
Established in 1993 by Sage Graduate Schools Dean Connie Frazer to honor Professor Emerita Frances P. Healy who taught education at RSC from 1969 through 1988.  Awarded to elementary education students who show the greatest progress in personal maturity, academic accomplishment, or ability to apply theory to practice in an early childhood or elementary school setting.
June Joyce Herron Award Fund
Established in 1984 by Stephen K. Wanamaker, Esq. P.E. in memory of June Joyce Herron RSC '52 whom he dated while he was attending RPI and is for a senior who achieves excellence in English.
Gertrude E. Hodgman Prize Fund
Established in 1978 from donations from the students of Gertrude E. Hodgman, former director of the School of Nursing at RSC for senior nursing students who demonstrate active involvement in college or community affairs and display professional growth.
Hoffman Prize and Lecture Fund
Established in 1979 by Linda Rosenfield Hoffman RSC '62 and her husband Peter to provide an award in sociology, an award in sociology for pre-social work, and a lecture series.
M. Grace Jorgensen Nursing Achievement Award Fund
Established in 1987 by Grace Jorgensen RSC '50 in memory of her mother M. Grace Jorgensen to support grants for academic enrichment purposes to outstanding Sage nursing students for travel to support learning, academic programs, acquisition of learning materials or equipment and support for living expenses incurred during the period of the grant.
Karp Award Fund
Established to honor Hannah Karp and presented to outstanding students in a graduate nursing program.
Rosalyn and Morris Koffman Annual Award Fund
Established in 1987 by Rosalyn Koffman RSC Õ66 while a faculty member in Sage's Nursing Department for part-time nursing students at senior level, but not necessarily graduating, with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Luffman Prize Fund
Established for Chair of Physical Education Helen Luffman, RSC 1921 by her friend Virginia Harvey, RSC 1935 and given to outstanding senior P.E. students.
Helen Riewerts Matthei, RSC 1944, Graduate Nursing Research Award Fund
Established by Claudia Matthei Cavanagh, RSC 1971 in memory of her mother, Helen Riewerts Matthei, to honor her commitment to the nursing field. It is awarded to Sage Graduate Schools nursing students for use to offset expenses incurred during research performed as part of the nursing program requirements.
Richard H. Mattox Prize Fund
Established in 1980 by the NYS Chapter of American Academy of Health Administration in honor of Professor Richard H. Mattox who established the RSC program in Public Affairs. It is given to an RSC graduate in Political Science who intends to enter government and public service.
McMorran Biology Award Fund
Established in 1974 by Ruth McMorran, wife of Trustee John Burch McMorran and given for outstanding academic achievement in biology.
Donald and Denise Meservey Award Fund
Established in 1977 by Denise and Donald Meservey, JCA 1972, who was a member of the Colonie Police Department, for outstanding students graduating from the criminal justice program at either RSC or SCA.
Dr. Virginia L. Radley Memorial Prize in English Fund
Established through a bequest from Dr. Virginia Radley for a graduating RSC senior in English who expects to pursue graduate study in Literature, whose work is worthy of high honor and whose contributions have enhanced the study of literature for her classmates and teachers.
The Bruce Rainer Award in Theatre Fund
Established by Bruce Rainer's friend, Meryl Swanson Ruckterstuhl RSC '58 , SGS '97 for the woman who shows the most promise in the theatre department.
Returning Woman's Prize Fund
Established and funded by the efforts of the returning women's program at Sage through the sale of T-shirts and baked goods at SageFest. It is awarded to Returning Women who show great promise.
Susan Krauss Russell Prize Fund
Established in 1974 in memory of Susan Krauss Russell by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Krauss. Given to a student exhibiting high scholarship and professional contribution to the visual and performing arts department.
Paul F. Search Research Award Fund in Community Psychology
Established in 2006 in memory of Paul Search by his wife, Patricia Search in honor of his 30 years of teaching at The Sage Colleges for Community Psychology majors as part of research performed for their program requirements.
Nancy G. Slack Award Fund
Established in 2002 on the retirement of Professor Nancy G. Slack by fellow faculty, friends and former students. Additional funding also provided by Drs. Glenn and Nancy Slack. This award recognizes exemplary students who have completed at least their second year in biology, pre-medicine or biochemistry. This fund may also be used to support science department sponsored travel.
Douglas E. Stanley Criminal Justice Fund
Established in 1986 by Ray Stanley, head of security at Sage, as an award with the balance being used for periodicals and supplies for the criminal justice department.
Stedman Award Fund
Established in 1984 by a gift from the estate of Trustee George W. Stedman. Trustee from 1950-1981, Mr. Stedman attended Yale University and Albany law school. This award is given to outstanding chemistry students.
Edna Sniffen Travis Award Fund
Established in 1959 by Trustee Winifred Leo Haag RSC '23 in memory of classmate Edna Sniffen Travis for students in the Business Department.
UHY LLP Award Fund in Memory of Sidney Urbach Fund
Established in 1978 by UHY (formerly Urbach, Kahn & Werlin) in memory of Sidney Urbach for accounting students who show the greatest promise for a career in public accounting.
Charles & Helen Upton Prize Fund
Established in 1997 for Russell Sage College upper class majors in history who achieve the highest average.
Usher Award in Fine Arts Fund
Established by Ann Usher McKay RSC 1942 for outstanding SCA Fine Arts students.
Grace I. Van Dervoort Memorial Award Fund
Established in 1980 by students, colleagues and friends of the late Grace Van Dervoort, a long time professor at Russell Sage and chair of the chemistry department for outstanding senior chemistry or biochemistry students.
VanVleet Psychology Awards Fund (2 Awards)
Established in 1992 by Phyllis Van Vleet RSC 1934.  It provides funds for the Phyllis Van Vleet Psychology award presented to junior or senior female psychology majors in recognition of outstanding contributions to the psychology program at Russell Sage College and the Students' Award in Psychology for graduating senior psychology majors with the highest grade point average in psychology.
Linda Sahr Weingarten Memorial Award Fund
Established in 1987 by the RSC class of 1976 in memory of Linda Sahr Weingarten '76 to let women know it was okay to pursue their dreams. For seniors planning to study physical therapy or occupational therapy.
Eli Werlin Award Fund
Being funded by RSC 1974 alumnae, Eileen Kilday and Joanne Howard, in memory of a former Sage Professor Eli Werlin for business students.
Donald E. Willetts Prize Fund
Established in 1987 by faculty member Donald Willetts for students showing promise in the field of secondary school teaching from the education department.

Established in 2000 by Fredericka (Freddie) Voorhaar Slingerland RSC '36 to restore and preserve 69 First Street, Troy, known as the Slingerland Alumnae House.
William F. & Mary C. Kahl Campus Center Endowment Fund
Established in honor of Sage's 6th president, William F. Kahl Ph.D.and his wife Mary C. Kahl, Ph.D., for the continued improvement, beautification, furnishings, upkeep and upgrading of the Kahl Campus Center.
Margot Meyer Richter Endowment Fund
Established in 2000 through a bequest from Margot Meyer Richter, RSC 1952 for repairs, maintenance and capital expenditures relating to the physical plant of Russell Sage College.
Russell Sage College Gardens Fund
Established in 2010 by lead donors Virginia Kurtz Stowe RSC 1965 and Susan Moyle Lynch RSC 1971 for the gardens at Sage with first priority going to the gardens behind 88 First Street (McCrea House).
Vail House Fund
Established in 2000 by Fredericka (Freddie) Voorhaar Slingerland RSC '36 to restore and preserve 46 First Street, Troy, known as Vail House.
Florence H. Zeve, RSC 1952 and Harvey L. Zeve Jeanne H. Neff Athletic Center Endowed Fund
Established in 2010 Trustee Florence H. Zeve RSC 1952 and Harvey Zeve to honor the 8th president of The Sage Colleges, Jeanne H. Neff for the maintenance and upkeep of the Jeanne H. Neff Athletic Center.

Olga Andruskiw Memorial Lecture Series Fund
Established in 2002 in memory of Dr. Andruskiw by her colleagues, students and friends. For an annual lecture in the field of nursing, and for student travel to present research, or  student activity which goes above or beyond normal coursework, outreach programs, and the acquisition of equipment/hardware/software/professional books/journals.
Armenian Lecture Series Endowed Fund
Established by Lucille Gochigian Sarkissian, SCA '83 and Alice Jernazian Haig, RSC '41 for lectures, performance, books, videos, centered around Armenian culture.
Chapman Lecture Fund
Established in 1995 for the humanities by the Board of Trustees in honor of the induction of Sage's 7th president, Dr. Sara Chapman.
Colonie Jewish Association Lecture Series Fund
Established in 2011 by the Colonie Jewish Association for the support of events designed to educate students and the community at large about Jewish history, culture, literature, music and art.
Hoffman Prize and Lecture Fund
Established in 1979 by Linda Rosenfield Hoffman RSC '62 and her husband Peter to provide for sociology lectures.
Sherman David Spector Lecture Fund
Established in 1991 through the combined gifts of alumnae and friends of History Department Chair Dr. Spector, for a yearly lecture sponsored by the faculty member who holds the Sherman David Spector Professorship.
Van Dervoort Lecture Fund
Established in 1980 by the friends, colleagues and students of Chemistry Department Chair Grace Van Dervoort for chemistry lectures.

Established in 2004 by Henry Bohm in his wife's memory for any of The Sage Colleges students' emergency needs. These funds are not to be used for tuition, room/board, books or loan repayments.
Ann Usher McKay Fund for Flowers
Established by Ann Usher McKay, RSC 1942 so there will always be fresh flowers in the admission areas of both campuses to show warmth and our ability to care about all living things.
Eileen Mellion Ilberman '73 and Debra Mellion Prastien '75 Book Fund
Established by Sage Trustee, Barry Ilberman in honor of his wife Eileen Mellion Ilberman RSC 1973 and his sister-in-law, Debra Mellion Prastien RSC 1975. To purchase books for worthy and needy RSC students who have graduated from a Rockland County, NY high school.

Mary Lou Jenkins RSC 1951 Memorial Unrestricted Fund
Established in 2007 through a bequest from Mary Lou Jenkins for the general operations of The Sage Colleges.
Rosenstiel Physical Education Department Fund
Established in 1970 upon a suggestion by John T. Beemer on behalf of his daughter, Pamela Beemer Abeling RSC 1963, by a gift from the Dorothy H. and Lewis Rosenstiel Foundation in memory of Dorothy, for physical education.
The Sage Fund
Established in 1916 by Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage for unrestricted use.
General Unrestricted Magic Campaign Fund
Established in 2010 by numerous donors as part of the "Magic" endowment campaign for unrestricted use.
Emma Willard Fund
Established in 1916, for unrestricted use, with money that Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage left to the Emma Willard School in order to start Russell Sage College.

Judith A. Barnes Ph.D. Faculty Fellowship in Communications Fund
Established in 2005 by the Board of Trustees in honor of Board Chair Judith A. Barnes,Ph.D. RSC 1970, for salary and support of research and professional development for a faculty member in communications. May also be used for English, psychology, marketing, sociology, P.R., advertising, health, etc. as there is the need for good communication skills in all areas.
Broughton Graduate Fellowship Fund
Established in 1980 by Mr. Broughton in honor of Henry Primm Broughton and Jane Tinkham Broughton for the advanced study in any field with a requirement of a public lecture or symposium to summarize the research.
Lewis A. Froman Professorship Fund
Established in 1970 by the Board of Trustees upon the retirement of The Sage Colleges 4th President Dr. Lewis Froman for any discipline.
Lawrence Family Foundation Professorship Fund
Established beginning in 1990 by Trustee Albert and Barbara Lawrence through the Lawrence Family Foundation for faculty from the economics, business administration or business programs.
Emily L. Mantilia RSC 1951 Professorship in Business Fund
Established in 2010 through a bequest from Emily Mantilla, RSC 1951, for business at RSC.
Betty Harder McClellan Distinguished Professor in Humanities Fund
Established in 1985 by F. William Harder as a fellowship and later increased to a professorship by his daughter Betty Harder McClellan RSC '48, for the humanities at RSC and SCA.
Edith McCrea Professorship Fund
Established by Edith McCrea RSC '24, with the first recipient named in 1992 for a senior member of the faculty in fine arts.
Edith Grace Craig Reynolds Chair of Religion and Philosophy Fund
Established by Reverend Dr. Edith Grace Reynolds through a bequest in her will for a professorship of religion and philosophy.
Walter & Anne Gruver Robb Faculty Fellowship in the Sciences Fund
Established in 1995 by Dr. Walter Robb and his wife Anne Gruver Robb RSC '51 for a current or visiting science faculty member.
Sherman David Spector Professorship Fund
Established in 1991 through the combined gifts of alumnae and friends of Dr. Spector, former chair of the Russell Sage History Department, for the humanities department.
Lorraine Walker Chair in Psychology Fund
Established in 1992 by Lorraine Walker Bardsley RSC 1938 for psychology or school counseling.

Established in 1999 by Dorothy Donahue and Irene Donahue for the preservation and collection of the works of 20th century poets and authors.
Mary Josephine Hare Fund
Established in 1955 through bequests from Mary Josephine Hare and Jessie H. Hare for the Russell Sage College library.
Helen Harris Library Fund
Established in 1993 from the estate of Hiram D. Harris and named in memory of his wife, Helen Marx Harris RSC 1926 for the library .
Jack Harris Fund For First Year Interdisciplinary Academic Programs at Russell Sage College
Established in 2011 by Professor Jack Harris upon his retirement from Sage for first-year interdisciplinary programs.
WendySue Davis Prout, RSC 1985 Fund for Athletics
Established in 2010 by WendySue Davis Prout, RSC 1985 for the athletic department at Sage.
George F. Regan Business Curriculum Fund
Established in 2009 through a bequest from Jayne Regan Harris, widow of political science professor Arnold Harris. Named for Jayne's father George F. Regan and used for the business curriculum.
Elmer C. Schacht Memorial Fund for Doctoral Fellowships
Established by the Board of Trustees with unrestricted money left to the college through the estate of Elmer Schacht. Currently used for doctoral programs primarily through teaching and research fellowships and for faculty and student research.
Rosalind M. Wang Fund for Nursing
Established in 2012 by former professor Rosalind Wang in honor of the 90th year of nursing at Sage for nursing department programmatic purposes.
Helen C. Wheeler Award in Psychology Fund
Established in 1997 by the Will K. Weinstein Trust Philanthropic Fund and Sage Professor Susan Wheeler Roy in memory of her mother, Helen C. Wheeler for the Psychology department.

Doris Adams Ferguson '53 Memorial Endowed Student Fellowship for Sociology Fund
Established in 2003 by James T. Ferguson, Sr. to honor his wife's memory for at least one student annually in sociology or criminal justice. It provides funds during the junior or senior year for travel, field study, baccalaureate thesis, senior project, internship or creative, advanced study, field work or research.
Katherine Johnson Memorial Travel Fund
Established in 2007 through a bequest by Katherine Disbrow Johnson RSC 1929 to set-up travel abroad scholarships for students.
Keenan Professional Leadership Award Fund
Established upon the retirement of facutly member Marjory Keenan for nursing students to travel to foster their goals.
Chuk-Yin Lam-Erwin Fund
Established in 1996 in memory of faculty member Chuk-Yin Lam-Erwin by her husband, Robert Erwin, fellow faculty members and friends, for extra-curricular activities at RSC which enhance the classroom experience and allow for faculty members to provide programming for high-school students.
Nancy Parker Neumann Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 2005 in Nancy's memory by her family and friends for RSC students who attend the Border Witness Program through the New York State Labor Coalition or a similar program.
Louis & Hortense Rubin Community Fellows Program Fund
Established in 1990 by Louis Rubin in memory of his late wife Hortense Rubin for a cooperative venture among the faculty of Sage, RPI, HVCC, Emma Willard and participating agencies of Rensselaer County administered by Sage. It provides for faculty to strengthen the participating agencies in the region, as well as for part-time consulting.
Elmer C. Schacht Memorial Fund for Research
Established with unrestricted money left to the college through the estate of Elmer Schacht and currently used for research.
Scrimshaw Student Travel Fund
Established in honor of the inauguration of The Sage Colleges' ninth president, Susan C. Scrimshaw, Ph.D, for students to present at national or international conferences or when traveling to do research or service either domestically or internationally.
Marjorie Semerad Junior Faculty Travel Fund
Established in 1984 in memory of Professor Marjorie Semerad by many former students and friends for travel for early career visual arts and performing arts faculty members with five years or less at Sage.
Cynthia Crocco Spector '74 and Dr. Sherman David Spector Fellowship Fund
Established by Cynthia Crocco Spector, '74 in her and her late husband's name, who was a well respected professor at Sage. Awarded to RSC students enrolled in history, political science, or international studies for experiences that are broadly enriching and can support travel/learning/study/research.
Van Vleet Fund for Student Life
Established by Phyllis Van Vleet RSC '34 during the Students and Scholars campaign for trips for students to regional or national conventions, project presentations, leadership conferences, and staff development, etc.

Established in 2009 with a gift from Aggie's brother, Frank Stillman, and from friends and colleagues in memory of Agnes (Aggie) Stillman for Russell Sage College students who maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above.
George I. Alden Trust Scholarship Fund
Established in 1986 by the Alden Trust for students from Massachusetts.
Elizabeth Q. Ammerman Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 1967 in memory of Elizabeth Q. Ammerman for physical therapy students.
Anonymous Endowed Scholarship Fund
General scholarships from anonymous donors.
Charles E. Bessey Family Scholarship Fund
Established in 1998 by Charles E. Bessey in memory of both of his late wives, Ruth McGreivey Bessey RSC '31, and Elizabeth Davies Bessey RSC '31 for undergraduate students.
Susan Ungerman Blackwell '65 Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Education Fund
Established in 2000 by Kristin Blackwell Peterson and Katrina Blackwell Looper in memory of their mother, Susan Ungerman Blackwell, '65 for worthy and needy students in the education program.
BRAE Scholarship Fund
Established in 1995 by Joseph and Jennifer Cross Pilaro, RSC '56 for a junior or senior enrolled at RSC in the nursing program, with a preference to students interested in a career in public health and nursing.
Marion and LeRoy Brownell Scholarship Fund
