The Sage Colleges invites applications and nominations for the position of Provost. The Sage Colleges is a dynamic, comprehensive college located on two campuses in the Capital District of upstate New York. The coeducational undergraduate Sage College of Albany in Albany, N.Y.; the undergraduate Russell Sage College for women in Troy, N.Y.; and the graduate Esteves School of Education, School of Health Sciences, and School of Management, with programs on both campuses, comprise the aspects of a small university in a friendly college setting. Sage enrolls more than 3,000 students in bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs. Interdisciplinary academics, community engagement, international exposure, and artistic and athletic endeavors are among the pillars of the educational experience at The Sage Colleges.
The Position: Reporting to the President, the Provost is the chief academic officer of the College overseeing all academic departments and programs, and the services that support them, in a dynamic, evolving, and innovative environment. The Provost also oversees the development of new academic programs, as well as the recruitment and development of faculty. As a member of the President’s cabinet, the Provost shares responsibility for strategic planning and administrative leadership. In the absence of the President, the Provost serves as chief administrative officer for the College. The successful candidate will work with the Vice President for Student Life to shape the student experience, the Vice President for Marketing and Enrollment Management for strategic recruitment, the Vice President for Finance/Treasurer for budget development and priority-setting and the Vice President for Administration and Planning in coordinating her areas with academic priorities.
Responsibilities: The Provost is responsible for building and sustaining excellence in current programs and identifying opportunities that will enhance the Colleges’ reputation and sources of revenue. The Provost leads the faculty through the Deans of the undergraduate colleges and the graduate schools, as well as through active participation in a shared faculty governance system. The Provost also has oversight of libraries and other academic units in the delivery of academic programs and services that are high quality and responsive to the needs of students in each of the Colleges.
Qualifications: To be considered, candidates will have an earned doctorate or other terminal degree with a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship suitable for a tenured full professor appointment, preferably in an academic discipline at The Sage Colleges. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in the following areas: operational leadership and management of a complex academic organization at the Dean level or higher; success in promoting innovative approaches to overcome challenges and lead new initiatives with a broad range of constituencies; commitment to diversity and fairness; leadership fostering excellent teaching, strong scholarship and creative endeavors; experience with strategic planning, budgeting, personnel administration and fundraising; experience in environments similar in size, scope, and complexity to The Sage Colleges; and the ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of constituents both on and off campus. In addition the successful candidate will have a visible and accessible leadership style consistent with shared governance and consensus building and a deep understanding of graduate and undergraduate education in the liberal arts and sciences and professional programs.
