In wealthy Washington Square, reclusive Catherine Sloper lives alone with her disappointed father, who believes she is "an entirely mediocre creature”, lacking the spirit and beauty of her deceased mother. Her lonely world is transformed by the attentions of handsome Morris Townsend, a poor young man with the gift of flattery. Suspicion and heartbreak settle in at Washington Square as a battle of wills is played out over an inherited fortune.
