Sage Recognized for Relay For Life Success

Albany, NY The Sage Colleges have long supported the fight against cancer and now the American Cancer Society is honoring Sage for its continued commitment. Sage is the only local participant to receive this national honor.

For the past six years, Sage has hosted Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society's signature activity and the largest fundraiser in the world, involving more than 3000 communities in the United States and 19 countries. In those six years, the Sage family has significantly increased its' fundraising and outreach: what started as a small, successful gathering in 2004 has evolved into much more. Last years event raised nearly $22,000, thanks to the 36 teams, 222 participants and 16 survivors who worked to collect donations and pledges.

On Tuesday, March 2, the Capital Region Chapter of the American Cancer Society will present Sage President Susan Scrimshaw and Director of Recreation and Fitness Jill Grebert with a plaque, in recognition of Sages outstanding fundraising efforts. The ceremony will also recognize Relay All-Stars, individuals who excel in their efforts to support the Society's mission to eliminate cancer as a life-threatening illness.

"Concerned college students are integral to the fight against cancer through Relay for Life," said American Cancer Society Director of Special Events Loretta Haberman, RSC 00 and SGS 06. "There are over 400 college Relay For Life events which bring together over 15,000 teams, 160,000 participants and raise over $20 million annually in the fight against cancer."

Relay for Life is a fun-filled event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs. Teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
