An Armory Show: Michael Oatman and Ken Ragsdale at the Opalka Gallery, Sept. 6 - Dec. 15

September 5, 2013 at 12:48 pm

The Opalka Gallery will host An Armory Show from Friday, September 6 through December 15, 2013,  with local artists Kenneth Ragsdale, lecturer in the arts at RPI, and Michael Oatman, an associate professor in the College of Architecture at RPI.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, Sept. 6 from 5 to 9 p.m.

An Armory ShowThe subject and development of the installation took form during a series of conversations between Oatman, Ragsdale and Opalka Gallery Director Emeritus Jim Richard Wilson, precipitated by the Sage's purchase and ongoing renovation of the New Scotland Avenue Armory (1913). Using salvaged materials from the armory for inspiration, the artists developed an installation/exhibition that pays homage to the International Exhibition of Modern Art, a.k.a. The 1913 Armory Show; the notorious exhibition held at the Lexington Avenue Armory in New York City that brought modern art to America.

Described by some as an assemblage, An Armory Show is a provocative compilation of modern day methods and materials, artifacts, paintings, drawings and sculpture that suggest the historical significance of its ancestor’s long term impact on society and culture. The term “avant-garde” in the world of art and matters of protection as well as the provocation of Marcel Du Champ’s “A Nude Descending a Staircase, 1912,” are skillfully considered by Ragsdale and Oatman. The installation includes 100 works of art from over 40 contemporary regional artists. Displayed inside an interactive structure designed and built by Ragsdale, each work of art carries within it an inherited gene that reflects a stylistic consideration from the past.
