October 16, 2013 at 11:33 am

TROY, NY - The Sage Colleges will host 24 Hours of Reality: The Cost of Carbon beginning Tuesday, October 22 at 2 p.m. and continuing through Wednesday, October 23 at 2 p.m. in Buchman Pavilion on the Russell Sage campus in Troy.

The event, which is being sponsored by the Sage Climate Crisis Center, will feature a global broadcast led by former Vice President Al Gore and The Climate Reality Project. The broadcast, which will include scientists, economists, celebrities, artists and other experts from around the world, will explore carbon pollution and its impact on climate change through unique stories, videos and music. Each hour will highlight a different continent – Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America or South America – and examine how carbon pollution and climate change are shaping crucial local issues from food security to extreme weather. In conjunction with the global broadcast, Sage will present a continuous showing of documentaries and several climate-themed films, and provide members of the local audience an opportunity to join the discussion through additional activities such as complementary student projects.

“The great irony of the climate crisis, which has already begun to impact our world from the expanding number of massive storms like Sandy to the Midwest drought that so devastated parts of Middle America is that we already have the technology to move more quickly away from fossil fuels and toward safer green energy alternatives,” explained Dr. Steven Leibo. “What we lack is a sense of urgency which only greater knowledge of the depth of the threat we face can create. This year’s ‘Cost of Carbon’ webcast is designed to help develop that sense of urgency.”Steven Leibo

Leibo is professor of Modern International History & Politics and head of The Climate Crisis Center at Sage. The center gives students the opportunity to work closely on The Climate Reality Project in the New York/New England area and links them with project volunteers across the world. Leibo was personally trained by former Vice President Gore to give updated versions of the famous Climate Crisis slide show from the Academy Award Winning Film "The Inconvenient Truth." Over the last several years he has given hundreds of talks on the Climate Crisis in locations from upstate New York to China and Mongolia.

Last year, 24 Hours of Reality attracted a record 16 million-plus online views from around the world. The Climate Reality Project, founded and chaired by former Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore, is dedicated to unleashing a global cultural movement demanding action on the climate crisis.

The public is welcome to attend the event at Sage. For more information contact Dr. Steven Leibo at (518) 244-2330 or leibos@sage.edu.
