ALBANY & TROY, NY – The Sage Colleges is pleased to announce that Susan Beatty, Ph.D. has accepted the position of provost of The Sage Colleges. Beatty will replace retiring provost Terry Weiner, Ph.D. who has served as provost since 2010.

Beatty comes to Sage from Portland State University, where she served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Prior to Portland, Beatty was associate dean for the natural sciences and chair of the department of geography at the University of Colorado, Boulder and a member of the faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles. Beatty earned her Bachelor’s degree in biology from Emory University and her Ph.D. in ecology and evolutionary biology from Cornell University.

"I am delighted that Susan Beatty will be joining our leadership team at The Sage Colleges,” said Sage President Susan C. Scrimshaw. “At Portland State University she oversees 25 departments, 19 centers and institutes, and over 450 faculty. She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge on many levels from administration to research and community outreach. Her vision and enthusiasm will be a wonderful addition to The Sage Colleges.”

“I am proud to be joining The Sage Colleges because I will become part of an institution that has creatively remained ahead of the curve in educational innovation for almost a century,” exclaimed Susan Beatty.  “That is an awesome legacy to inherit, and I look forward to keeping Sage out in front as we enter the next centennial!”

As Dean at Portland State University, Beatty worked with faculty to establish new degree programs, certificates, schools, and online offerings. Beatty is also a geographer who conducts research in the areas of forest ecology, soil science, climate, and conservation. Her research has been funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Park Service.  She has a long term research site at the Huyck Preserve in Rensselaerville, NY, and has been collecting data there since 1977.

Beatty will assume the role of Provost in August.
