Spring 2013 (March 30, 2013)
Class Notes March 2013
Click here to jump to notes for a particular decade:
I was informed of the passing of Elisabeth Boltwood Bliss in November 2012. Betty was a commuter like me and we made our daytime home in Thompson House on campus.
The family of Doris McCarren Ernest let us know of her passing in June 2012. We've also lost Marion Hubbard Cook in 2011. It is sad to report a death, but such long lives are a blessing. We wish the remainder of us more happy and healthy days and years.
I paddle along at my own slower gait and wish you all well.

In my notes published in Connections, I wrote of a fun visit during December that Jeanne had from her daughter, Sally, and Donna Rose Hall French ’71. Jeanne was a high school science teacher and a graduate of Emma Willard School. At Russell Sage she was a chemistry lab assistant and senior class president. She was popular and outgoing. In keeping with her love of learning and her giving spirit, she requested her body be donated to the Albany Medical College Anatomical Gift Program.

Sadly, three classmates passed on in 2012: Dorothy Lang Turchick in January; Elizabeth Caughran in July; and June Price in May. The class extends sympathy to their families.
On a happier note, I received a telephone call from Esther Romweber Davidson. She was looking forward to seeing family over the holidays, including those coming from Germany. Esther will be unable to attend Reunion #70, but she sends best wishes.
Let's forget the high birthday number and plan a trip to Troy this spring to celebrate all our years. I hope to see you then!

Thanks to Barbara Pierce Duke for forwarding news about Marjorie Grathwohl Driver, cited in a recent article, as one of Guam's National Treasures. The Guam Legislature commended Marjorie for dedicating her professional life to a greater understanding of the history of the Mariana Islands during Spanish dominion. Marjorie retired as associate professor of Spanish and curator of the Spanish documents collection at the Micronesian Area Research Center at the University of Guam. It's great to learn of her success.
I was invited to be on the executive committee of the Boston Author's Group, organized in the late 19th century. And the Boston College Association of Retired Faculty, which I helped organize, awarded me a small grant to write a book (more work!) Just returned from an Argentine Tango cruise on the Norwegian Epic. Instructive and fun.

Barbara Tyrell Kelly’s book, Growing Up In Lake Placid, contains chapters about Russell Sage during the years after WWII. I am sure alumnae from that era will remember our rules, the Men's Division, freshman dorm first meeting, Tea Dances with the RPI Campus Serenaders, phys-ed Camp at Lake Luzerne and much more. Contact Barbara at email@example.com; 89 Greenwood St., Lake Placid, NY,12946; or 518-302-5043.
Never, ever could I have dreamed of what happened in Newtown. Then, Marjorie Schwartz Lewis and Betty Weisner confirmed what we had suspected. The principal of Sandy Hook, Dawn Hochsprung, had the same name as our classmate, Marian Hochsprung Barney, and was married to Marian's nephew. Marian, your classmates, send our condolences to you, your family and indeed to all those touched by this tragedy.
Other sad news is the death of Carolyn Lomas Balsam last October. The Class of 1949 sends sympathy to her family and friends.
Betty Weisner is into tai chi and bridge and recently celebrated her 85th birthday. Aren't we all pretty close to it?
Marjorie Schwartz Lewis is a star: check out "If we don't go digital" at YouTube.com/Crandell Theatre.
Harriet Blank Lapkin visited a daughter last summer and also saw Ruth Norby Hensley, who lives in Highlands Ranch, near Denver, in a home full of Scandinavian art. In November, Harriet attended a meeting of the Northern California chapter of the Alumnae Association and enjoyed meeting President Scrimshaw.

Remember 2013 is our 60th Reunion! Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 31 through June 2 and make plans to come to Troy to celebrate.
Jane Loeb writes, “I am looking forward to our 60th and hope that many of our classmates attend. I recently had lunch with a dear friend, Florence Einhorn ’32 (no mistake!) She is very alert, has a fantastic memory and we reminisced about the Sage of "times gone by." Do you remember when our meals were served to us in the dining hall with formal Wednesday and Sunday dinners?”

Len and I traveled to Puerto Vallarta, but this year we will join the "old folks" in Florida. We live in Edgewater, NJ and have an apartment with a beautiful, dazzling view! We are happy and have been married to each other for 58 years.

After a delightful phone conversation with Barbara Bell, who lives in Pittsfield, MA,she graciously summarized her news in an email. “I retired in 2001 after 35 years of teaching. Now I enjoy being a Florida snowbird with my companion of 27 years, Chuck
Gilson. Both of us taught in Pittsfield High School (MA). Chuck taught European AP
History and I taught AP US History (thanks to the Uptons!) I am on the board of the
Berkshire Historical Society at Herman Melville's Arrowhead (where he wrote Moby
Dick), volunteer in the archives there, and produce a page for the weekly Pittsfield
Gazette newspaper called "Pittsfield's Past." I meet in Albany, from time to time, with
Bonnie Lee Karsten Wasson, and have been meeting with Ellen MacHaffie Rocco of
Orlando, FL each spring for a luncheon on the shores of Tampa Bay. Sue Bogart Denley and her husband joined us in past years. This past December, as Chuck and I drove back to Massachusetts for family Christmas gatherings, we stopped in Smyrna, GA to visit Sue and Walter. They are very proud of their daughter's success in business and their three grandchildren. I even crocheted a green and white Christmas scarf for Sue, the most loyal Sage-ite of our group.”

I, Lois, heard from Steph Cervelloni via LinkedIn. She is an owner at Pediatric Physical Therapy in Chagrin Falls, OH. I've been emailing Carol Linendoll. We were working together during the blizzard of '78 and were reminiscing driving on Rt 80. Hopefully we will get together at her Rhode Island home this spring.
The other day I opened my office, and sitting on my desk is a 40 oz Genesee Cream Ale. An elderly man had given it to my massage therapist and when my husband saw it, he said, "I think that's what Lo drank in college." Those six-packs were 99 cents! Seeing that can brought a flood of memories back...and hangovers!
So where is Beth Tusa, Sharon Lupardi, Mish Rowen? Join us on Facebook! And tonight I am cracking that Genny Cream Ale to see if it still tastes the same...

I, Lisa Abatemarco, am back in North Carolina – as soon as Congress straightens out this budget, I should be back in Baltimore permanently! In the meantime, I’m living with my Mom and the basset hounds. Mom turned 81 this year. It’s tough watching her get older.
A lot of you celebrated 30th wedding anniversaries in 2012. Terry Garrity Bentley and Ray and Kathleen Burns Meyerson and Dave were among that group. Terry has been traveling a lot. She has been to London twice and is now going back and forth to Florida to watch Shelby (my goddaughter!) ride her horse in competitions.

Congratulations to Nadine Meyers Austin’s daughter, who received a college scholarship.
Terry Allen and I had a wonderful visit this fall in her hometown of Lowville, NY. She renovated her kitchen: “At times the kitchen started to feel like the money pit and I was sure buying a new house would be cheaper. However, I love the finished project and I could not have given myself a better Christmas present!” She and I may be spending more time together if my son chooses to attend Clarkson University. Her home is on the way to the University. At this time his first choice is the Military Academy at West Point. He is one step closer having received a congressional nod. My daughter will start her master’s degree at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in September.
Terry and I would love to hear from all of you.

She had responded to an email I sent in August and written about her children, a son and twin daughters. She was working as a physical therapist in Lockport, NY. It was so nice to hear from her as we had lost touch after graduation. I urge all of you to take a moment and reconnect with your old friends.
