John Van Alstine: Arrested Motion/Perilous Balance

The combination of natural elements and man-made materials has long fascinated sculptors. John Van Alstine carries the union to a new plane and creates an aesthetically stunning marriage of stone and metal. Centuries-old stone united with contemporary metals meld into an innovative perceptual schema that is unique to Van Alstine. Seemingly precarious in their placement, they are in fact well rooted. What look like spontaneous optical effects are structured perceptual statements that create an ambiguous illusion. (Ellen Landis)

Faith Ringgold and Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson take us on an inspired visual journey through memory, while weaving in monumental stories of their own journeys ripe with heritage and community. Jazz to Hip-Hop, Hip-Hop to Now
Moderated by Truemaster Trimingham. DJ Trumaster is an educator for the New York State Museum, founder of Beat*Shot Productions, and an international touring DJ based in Albany, NY. Trumaster will lead a performance based panel discussion on the roots and collective history of jazz and hip-hop in the community. This event is free to the public. Additional panel information PDF

Children’s art project workshops will be held at 1pm on the first Saturday of each month during this exhibition. Space is limited to 15 people per workshop. Cost is $5.00 per participant.

12th Annual Underground Railroad History Conference

The year 2013 is the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the 100th anniversary of the death of Harriet Tubman and the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington. These, and other key anniversary events, are milestones along the road to achieving Martin Luther King’s vision articulated in his “I Have a Dream” speech. The 12th annual conference on the Underground Railroad seeks to connect the Underground Railroad, these key events and present day struggles for freedom and justice. This public history conference, scheduled for April 12-14, 2013, will be held at Sage Colleges Albany, Russell Sage College, and the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence. At the Opalka Gallery, the exhibition Stories and Journeys: The Art of Faith Ringgold and Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson will be the center piece of the Educator's Workshop and Opening Address on Friday, April 12

Michele Wallace, Professor of English at The City College of New York, is a widely published analyst of African America art, and the daughter of the renowned African American artist Faith Ringgold. Professor Wallace is also a leading Black Feminist, whose 1997 breakthrough book, Black Macho and The Myth of The Superwoman, is of historical and critical importance.
