Peer Education Program
The mission of Wellness Peer Education Program is to develop and implement a comprehensive and proactive peer education program which promotes low risk choices for students and community members and which reflects the attitudes, behaviors and values of the Wellness Center.
Peer Educators are a diverse group of students who are trained to make a significant contribution to the Sage Community. As campus leaders who are committed to the ideals of health and wellness, they are responsible for assisting the Wellness Center staff in providing accurate and up to date educational information to students.
Wellness Peer Educators are involved in planning and facilitating prevention programming such as:
- National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week
- Great American Smoke-out
- Stress Free Zone
- Beat the Blues Depression Screening
- Eating Disorders Awareness Week
- Alcohol Screening Day
- Stall Stories
- Sex-Tac-Toe
- 21 Birthday Card Project
Peer Educators are also expected to model healthy lifestyles and help increase possibilities for individual growth and cultural change on campus resulting in a safer and healthier campus community.
Job Responsibilities
- Participate in weekly hour-long meetings throughout the academic year and periodic training sessions on topics such as alcohol and drugs, safer sex, relationships, dating violence, and stress, to name a few.
- Keep track of weekly hours worked and document hours on time sheets.
- Demonstrate familiarity with campus and community wellness resources to provide appropriate referrals.
- Provide campus programming which will include: Passive Programming - writing articles, creating fact sheets, designing displays and bulletin boards, staffing information booths, and assisting the Wellness Center with various health campaigns and projects; Educational Presentations - going into residence halls and class rooms to educate students around various wellness issues.
- Represent the college at community events, conferences as needed.
- Act as a liaison between the Wellness Center and students, identifying current tends and issues around which we might focus our efforts, acting as our eyes and ears.
- Become certified as a Nationally Certified Peer Educator using Bacchus and Gamma 12-hour Video Training Course. Please note this is optional based on individual interest and schedules. See advisors for more information.
