RSC - A History:

Russell Sage College was founded in Troy in 1916 by suffragist Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage, with the guidance of Eliza Kellas, head of the college preparatory Emma Willard School (also located in Troy). Together they founded Russell Sage College as a school of practical arts, one of the very first institutions to offer women the means of economic and social independence through preparation for professional careers.

Ranked in the top tier of National Liberal Arts Colleges by U.S. News and World Report, Russell Sage College encourages women to take risks, discover their strengths, and apply what they've learned. RSC's general education program, WORLD – Women Owning Responsibility for Learning and Doing – makes Russell Sage one of the only schools in the country to feature a curriculum grounded in women's experience and ways of knowing.

The Discovery Degree – "Your Bachelor's in Three" – allows exceptional students to enhance almost any major and earn a degree in three years.

Included in RSC's 23 programs are:

  • Biochemistry-one of the oldest American Chemical Society-approved programs in the country.

Outside the RSC Classroom:Political Science Students

Many students complement their classroom learning with semesters abroad or short-term travel. Russell Sage College is home to the only incubator for nanotechnology and emerging science ventures on a women's college campus The newly-launched Theatre Institute at Sage continues the mission of the New York State Theatre Institute, offering students a full semester of hands-on internship and extensive performance possibilities. Russell Sage has rich traditions – including Little Sisters and Big Sisters, Banner Ceremony, Rally and "battle of the classes" competitions – that continue to flourish and strengthen students' ties to the College and to each other. Through Russell Sage's extensive internship program, students earn hands-on experience and class credit, while building a highly marketable résumé. Strategic global partnerships include the Sage-SIFT Alliance with the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade; an exchange program for nursing students with Mahidol University in Thailand; and relationships with universities in Spain, China, Mexico and Canada.
