Dean's Welcome Letter

Welcome to Russell Sage College, where women succeed.

Located in a beautiful Victorian city on New York's Hudson River, Sage is a contemporary college with a heart full of traditions - a community of learners where students are nurtured and challenged. As soon as you set foot on campus, you'll sense the Sage difference.

Our outstanding faculty, small classes, and concern for the individual are central to a Sage education. We've dedicated our careers to teaching women, and we are experts! At Russell Sage, women dominate every class discussion, run the student government and the campus newspaper, and win all the academic prizes and scholarships; every penny that the College spends on athletics supports women in sports.

In short, women are the center of our world. That doesn't make this a campus without men or without the potential for an active social life; it means that in the classroom, in the lab, on the playing field, and beyond, Russell Sage students are free to be their most intelligent, creative, determined, successful selves.

Here at Sage we're particularly proud of our core curriculum, which focuses on women's accomplishments and potential for leadership. In "Women in the World," first-year students gain a global yet personal perspective on the status of women, through biography and autobiography. In "Women Changing the World," seniors do just that: they work on change projects as a way of understanding advocacy and activism. They become women of influence.

A Russell Sage education lasts a lifetime, as do the friendships made here. From late night study sessions in our restored brownstones to the raucous celebrations of Rally, we are truly a community. Big sisters stay in touch with little sisters, Sagettes (our a cappella singing group) return year after year for the spring Fudgesicle Concert, and alums stay connected with favorite faculty members for years after graduation. It's a very special place.
