Traditions
I value the strength of community.
Founded nearly a century ago as an “inspired innovation,” Russell Sage has unique traditions that continue to flourish and strengthen students’ ties to the College and to each other.
Russell Sage traditions create a sense of unity among students. Members of the first year class are teamed up as Little Sisters with Big Sisters in the junior class, who make them feel at home.
Each class unites (under names like “Blue Angels” and “Golden Horseshoes”) to observe the ritual of the Banner Ceremony, or to compete fiercely during Rally, the good-natured but very spirited “battle of the classes.” Every class has a Class Historian, who, as one student said “holds our memories in her hands,” and a Song Leader, who teaches and promotes the class songs.
Most importantly, all classes come together for annual events such as SageFest, Founder’s Convocation, and the Winter Formal. Through these common experiences are forged some of the strongest bonds of friendship and sisterhood.
