In the RSC Writing Studio, undergraduate and graduate writing tutors assist writers from across the disciplines in all phases of the paper-writing process. In individual and group conferences, tutors respond to the needs of writers by providing them with reader responses and instruction which helps them to discover and implement an effective writing and editing process. The Writing Studio Graduate Assistant works with the Director of the Writing Studio and other staff in the delivery of Writing Studio services.
Qualifications:
Prospective assistants should possess
• a BA or BS in English, Literacy, Education, or related field
• an aptitude for instruction and working with a diversity of learners; previous experience as a Writing Tutor is a plus.
• excellent written and oral communication skills
• a willingness to serve as a mentor to all students, especially to those historically under-represented in the college setting.
Duties:
The Writing Studio Graduate Assistant helps cultivate a community of learners and contributes to a reflective and responsive writing center pedagogy by assisting the Writing Studio Director in performing the following duties:
• Develop training and other instructional materials for writers and writing tutors
• Develop and present workshops on writing and grammar skills, as well as informational sessions on Writing Studio services
• Assist with the development and delivery of tutor training, specifically English 325, Peer Writing Practicum, internships, and other on-going training programs
• Conduct help sessions and orientations for new students, faculty, and other learning support and campus associates
• Tutor writing one-on-one, especially in the more complex cases, such as with LD, ESL, developmental, graduate and other student clients
• Assist with incorporating technology and other cutting-edge learning aides into writing instruction materials
• Work with other staff to provide comprehensive academic support services, including the Learning Support Specialist, the Coordinator of Disabilities, the Director and Assistant Director of the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP)
• Work with the Director and Assistant Director of HEOP to track progress and encourage program students to participate in Writing Studio services
• Work with the coordinators of the Peer Tutoring Program to provide consistent tutoring and training materials
• Assist in recruiting, hiring, and training new Writing Studio staff
• Maintain and generate Writing Studio data and reports
• Other administrative duties within the Writing Studio as assigned
