Rev. Beth Illingworth

Beth IllingworthProtestant Chaplain and Spiritual Advisor
with the Jane H. Wells Spirituality Center

Rev. Beth Illingworth comes from a long line of Presbyterian ministers. Her father, uncles and great- grandfather were all ordained ministers. Beth is the first woman in the family to enter the profession. Beth received her B.A. in Religion from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. She also met her husband, Paul Greene, there. She received her Master of Divinity from Harvard University in 1987.

Beth served as pastor of the Oakwood Avenue Presbyterian Church in Troy for ten years. It was an interracial congregation with roots in the Troy abolitionist movement. While at Oakwood, Beth helped develop the Troy Damien Center for people living with HIV/AIDS. With her congregation she also created an afterschool program for the children of their inner-city neighborhood.

Beth began her work as a chaplain and spiritual advisor at Russell Sage in 2001. She was delighted to participate in the creation of the Jane H. Wells Spirituality Center. While at Russell Sage she has focused on supporting students in their spiritual development, recognizing this is an integral part of their growth and maturation during the college years. Among other things, she enjoys teaching meditation, providing opportunities to walk the labyrinth and taking students on a History Walk around our Russell Sage neighborhood.

Beth also serves as the protestant chaplain at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She and her husband Paul live in Kinderhook, New York. They have two children, a daughter, Julian, and a son, Isaiah.
