Dogs of War Web Image

Was Shakespeare obsessed with war? More than half his plays take place during times of conflict. Shakespeare wrote during the rise of the warrior-poet, when tales of knights in shining armor brought audiences to their feet, a time when the stage was used to promote nationalism and justify battle by romanticizing war. But the playwright was also keenly aware of the horrors of combat. From kings and princes to paupers and slaves, this one-man show explores the Bard’s treatment of military conflict through the words of his soldiers. Dogs of War is the perfect crossover of Social Studies and English.

Grades 8-12

Dogs of War; Shakespeare’s Soldiers Description:

This 60 minute performance uses the words of Shakespeare and observations of David Bunce (writer/ performer) to bring the words of the Bard to the students of today. Connections are made to the combat soldier, the war protester, the families of those who serve, the veteran returning from war and to those studying Shakespeare’s plays. Students are asked to examine not only Shakespeare’s works but their own relationship to war as well.
