M.S.Ed. in Special Education
The Master of Science in Special Education program at the Esteves School of Education prepares teacher candidates to work with students with disabilities in grades 1-6.
The program is built around foundational knowledge, advanced theories and supervised practical experiences. It is our belief that a a sound theoretical and research background coupled with practical experiences creates highly qualified special education teachers. The program builds on education courses taken at the undergraduate level, to an expanded focus on mild, moderate, and significant disabilities.
The Special Education program at The Sage Colleges is relatively small, allowing faculty and teacher candidates to work closely together. This close working relationship begins during the first advising session when the faculty advisor and the teacher candidate develop a program of study tailored to meet his/her individual educational needs. This relationship continues throughout the candidate’s coursework, practical experiences, and the final assessment portfolio.
The Special Education program is designed for candidates who have already met the requirements for New York State provisional or initial certification in Childhood Education and are seeking professional certification in Special Education (grades 1-6)
All matriculated students complete and sign a program of study. Any change in stated coursework must receive written approval of the assigned faculty advisor.
Applicants for admission to the program must meet the general admission requirements for Sage Graduate School and must also meet the following specific requirements.
Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and
- Passing score on the edTPA or
- Complete the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) with the following minimum scores: Verbal Reasoning-145, Quantitative Reasoning-145, Analytical Writing-3.5 or
- Complete the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) with a minimum score of 350
- Applicants should have Initial Certification through the NYS Office of Teaching Initiatives highered.nysed.gov/tcert/ If accepted provisionally into the program without Initial Certification, certification must be received before 12 credits are completed or candidate will be unable to continue until such time as certification is received.
Pursuant to the law, each program is entitled to exempt a student from these admission requirements based on the exempted student’s demonstrated potential to positively contribute to the teaching profession.
