Pre-Professional Programs at Russell Sage College and Sage College of Albany
Preparing for a career in medicine (physician, physician assistant, veterinarian, dentist) is one of the biggest challenges you can undertake and one of the most rewarding. You can be part of this ever-changing and potentially life-saving profession.
Our pre-medical advisors will answer your questions and help you with course selection to build the strongest background possible. You can major in any degree and complete the required courses for premedical studies, but undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry are often chosen. Completing a senior research project or an internship will make you a highly competitive applicant. We also encourage Biology and Chemistry majors to become teaching assistants and to join student clubs to gain leadership experience. Your adviser will guide you as you prepare applications, write your personal statement, and practice your interview skills.
Pre-Physician Assistant Preparation
Physician assistant is one of the fastest growing professions in the United States. Our programs give you the foundational courses such as Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, and Statistics required by many schools offering a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant. All pre-PA students must gain patient contact experience. The BS in Applied Biology degree features articulations with the MS Physician Assistant program at Albany Medical College. Qualified first-year Biology majors can accelerate into the AMC Physician Assistant program.
Pre-Veterinary Medicine Preparation
Like pre-physician students our pre-vet students take basic science courses but they also complete specialized courses like animal behavior. They often intern at local veterinary clinics and volunteer at humane societies. Some students prefer to work with large animals at working farms or with exotic animals at zoological parks.
You can become a part of this growing and important profession. This is a satisfying and flexible career for women. And the number of women practicing dentistry is growing.
Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Studies
Students who already have a B.A. or B.S. degree and wish to apply to medical programs, PA programs, or PT/OT programs can complete our post-baccalaureate pre-medical studies certificate program.
