Pre-Professional Programs at Russell Sage College and Sage College of Albany
Preparing for a career in medicine (physician, physician assistant, veterinarian, dentist) is one of the biggest challenges you can undertake and one of the most rewarding. You can be part of this ever-changing and potentially life-saving profession.
Our pre-medical advisors will answer your questions and help you with course selection to build the strongest background possible. Undergraduate biology majors complete a senior research project and often complete an internship to make them highly competitive for professional schools. We also encourage Biology majors to become teaching assistants and to join student clubs to gain leadership experience. Your adviser will help you prepare applications, write your personal statement, and practice your interview skills.
Bachelor of Science in Biology majors are well-prepared for entry into medical programs to earn an M.D. or a D.O. You will work closely with your advisor who helps you in this process. Part of the application process includes writing a statement of goals including plans for research, community projects, and academic work and interviews with the Sage premedical committee and the medical schools. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 in required coursework in biology, chemistry, and physics.
Highly qualified Russell Sage students can gain early assurance acceptance to Albany Medical College (AMC) or Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara A.C. (UAG). You make application during your second year of studies. Part of the application process includes writing a statement of goals including plans for research, community projects, and academic work and interviews with the Sage premedical committee and the medical schools. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.4 in required coursework in biology, chemistry, and physics. Upon acceptance MCAT exams are waived.
Pre-Physician Assistant Preparation
Physician assistant is one of the fastest growing professions in the United States. Our program gives you the foundational courses required by many schools offering a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant.
At Sage you can enroll in courses to distinguish you, such as Pathology & Prevention of Injuries, Orthopedic Evaluation, and Pharmacology. You also have the option of taking upper-level courses in neurobiology and pathophysiology. All pre-PA students must gain patient contact experience.
Our pre-vet students take courses like zoology, animal behavior, and anatomy & physiology. They often intern at local veterinary clinics and volunteer at humane societies. Some students prefer to work with large animals at working farms or exotic animals at zoological parks.
You can become a part of this growing and important profession. This is a satisfying and flexible career for women. And the number of women practicing dentistry is growing.
