Help Yourself Academy (HYA) is an afterschool program for 3rd and 4th graders who attend Watervliet Elementary school.

HYA housed on the Sage campus (Troy, NY) two days a week and provides a/an:

  • After-school academy on a college campus
  • Opportunity to attract the best minds (Sage students) to spark the children’s imaginations
  • Venue to instruct elementary students with a rigorous, hands-on curriculum developed by National Board Certified Teachers
  • Curriculum rich in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM)
  • A model for one-on-one mentoring networks with college students, thereby establishing role models for the children and simultaneously channeling the idealism of college students into a “campus corps for children”
  • Opportunity for Sage education students to experience student diversity, professional planning and implementation, and the rigor/responsibility of an elementary classroom with support and guidance


  • Commit to a full academic year of service (both fall and spring semester)
  • Adhere to schedule
  • Attend professional trainings
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • Basic knowledge of lesson planning (able to construct and implement lessons)
  • Knowledge of Common Core standards
  • Ability to take initiative and effectively respond to directives
  • Maintain a professional dress code
  • Ability to understand and implement healthy boundaries with students, parents, and HYA staff members
  • Knowledge of basic science, mathematics, technology and engineering concepts (STEM)
  • Basic knowledge of age appropriate activities
  • Construct and submit weekly reflections
  • Bus duty coverage (to and from Sage)
  • Self-evaluation and Director evaluation (2x a year)
  • Signed contract outlining roles/responsibilities

The Teaching Assistant (TA) reports to the Program Director and will be responsible for working with other TAs as well as a second lead teacher in the Help Yourself Academy classroom.
