Student Teams Will Compete for Recognition and $87,000 in Prize Money

The Sage Colleges will host the 10th annual New York Business Plan Competition finals on Friday, April 26, at the Armory at Sage, 140 New Scotland Avenue, Albany, New York, 12208.

The Upstate Capital Association of New York is organizing the event and expects that more than 100 teams of students from across New York will pitch their business ideas at the competition. More than 500 people are expected to attend.

Winners will be selected by judging panels comprised of venture capitalists, angel investors, investment bankers and business leaders. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each of six tracks, including NYSERDA’s Energy & Sustainability Track, AgTech and Food, MedTech and Wellbeing, Technology & Entertainment, Military & First Responder and Consumer Products & Services.

For students, the road to the 2019 NYBPC finals began with regional competitions in western New York, the Finger Lakes, the Southern Tier, central New York, the Mohawk Valley, North Country, Capital Region, Mid-Hudson region, New York City and Long Island. Partner colleges and universities hosted regional semifinal competitions. The top teams from each region will compete in the statewide finals in Albany on April 26.

“Small business and entrepreneurship are the driving force of the economy,” said Kim Fredericks, Ph.D., dean of Sage’s School of Management and a member of the coalition that administers the New York Business Plan Competition. “The coalition is a collaboration between education institutions, private entities and government agencies. Many people have worked together to make this happen and Sage’s Albany community is pleased to play a role in this important event that includes participants from every region of the state.”

The NYBPC is the only collegiate business competition in the nation that is regionally coordinated and includes the entire state of New York, involving over 100 colleges and universities between regionals and finals. Since 2010, more than 2,700 student teams from public and private colleges, community colleges and universities throughout New York have pitched ideas at the NYBPC, and more than $1 million has been awarded.
