Bestselling Author Anna Quindlen Addresses Graduates; Princess of Thailand Receives Honorary Degree
Albany & Troy, NY – The Sage Colleges 95th Commencement on Saturday, May 12 features Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and bestselling author Anna Quindlen, as well as Her Royal Highness Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Princess of Thailand. Quindlen will deliver the commencement address to more than 500 graduates expected to be in attendance at the ceremony, which begins at 10 a.m. at the Houston Field House in Troy. Both Quindlen and Her Royal Highness will receive honorary doctoral degrees.

Anna Quindlen’s books have appeared on fiction, nonfiction and self-help bestseller lists, and her columns have won her many of journalism’s most prestigious awards. She was the third woman to write for The New York Times' influential op-ed page, where she wrote her award- winning column, "Public and Private." She recently retired from Newsweek, where she wrote "The Last Word" for 10 years.
Quindlen has written six bestselling novels: Object Lessons, One True Thing, Black and Blue, Blessings, Rise and Shine, and more recently, Every Last One, now out in paperback. She has published three collections of her columns, Living Out Loud, Thinking Out Loud, and Loud and Clear, as well as How Reading Changed My Life and Imagined London. Her book A Short Guide to A Happy Life has sold more than one million copies. It was followed by Being Perfect, another national bestseller, and Good Dog. Stay, her New York Times bestselling book about her black Labrador, Beau. Her latest book, a memoir on aging titled Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake was published April 2012. She was recently named among the "100 Outstanding Journalists in the United States of the Last 100 Years" by New York University.
Quindlen is a native of Philadelphia and a graduate of Barnard College. She is on the board of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and holds honorary degrees from more than a dozen American universities.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand has spent decades working for Their Majesties’ development projects in a number of fields including, health and hygiene, education, water resource development and agriculture. She began her teaching career in 1979 at Chulalongkorn University and later joined the Department of Law and Social Sciences in the Academic Division of Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy, where she is the Director of the Department of History.
Her Royal Highness presently serves as executive vice president of the Thai Red Cross Society, executive chairwoman of the Chaipattana Foundation (in charge of His Majesty's development and environmental preservation projects), the Ananda Mahidol Foundation (to promote higher education), the King Rama II Foundation (to preserve and promote Thai culture) and is president of the Sai Jai Thai Foundation (to support disabled veterans) and the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation (to award prizes annually to members of the international community for outstanding performances in the fields of medicine and public health).
Her Royal Highness has done a great deal to make education a priority in Thailand and continues to work to make education accessible to all, especially students with special needs. She is known as the “Technology Princess” because of her focus on bringing technology to Thailand.
In addition to her advocacy and philanthropic efforts, Her Royal Highness writes poetry, articles and short stories. She travels extensively and internationally to promote health, education and her country. Her accomplishments have been acclaimed by many universities, both local and international, through the bestowal of honorary doctorates in several disciplines, and she has been granted honorary awards and titles from many institutions and organizations worldwide.
A total of 884 degrees earned will be conferred, including bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, as well as post-baccalaureate and post-master’s certificates.
