Physical Education

The Teacher Education Physical Education (PETE) program is housed in the Department of Health, Physical Education and School Counseling in the Esteves School of Education. The Bachelor of Science degree requires 121 semester hours of course work including field-based coursework and a field-based internship. The teacher licensure option prepares teacher candidates to teach physical education in grade levels from kindergarten through secondary school. The teacher licensure program is fully accredited by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

During the first two years of the program, teacher candidates are given numerous opportunities to develop their teaching skills through a series of early experiences with children.  The department offers small classes, ensuring student interaction with faculty members. Faculty members offer a warm and supportive environment and are energetic and involved with all teacher candidates.  Graduates of the SCA PE program are eligible for NYS certified in coaching upon completion of first aid/CPR.

Students completing SCA PE program should consider continuing at Sage to complete and acquire a master's in School Health Education (requiring a student teaching experience). This degree fulfills the master's requirement by NYS Education Department. Those PE students interested in the master's should contact the advisors for those programs.
