Russell Sage College Students

For parents and family members of Russell Sage College students

Dear Families,

We are thrilled to have you as part of the Sage community. As families, you may be feeling mixed emotions, excited for the adventures to come for your students, while perhaps a bit anxious about seeing them transition to this next important step. The Student Life Office keeps busy all year to help students find success within and outside the classroom at Sage. A major part of that is making sure that our orientation programs provide students and families with the information and connections they need to start the semester off on the right foot. We are currently busily preparing for our upcoming new student orientation sessions. Please note that orientation is in two parts: Summer (online) and Fall Welcome Orientation (in person).

This summer, we will offer online orientation programs that will allow students to work at their own pace to gather important information.  We hope you will join them in reviewing the information and reach out if you have any questions along the way.  In addition, we will hold live virtual orientation sessions with various offices on Thursday, July 16th for First Year Students and on Wednesday, July 22nd for Transfer Students. If public gatherings are permitted in the Capital Region this summer, students and families will have the opportunity to visit campus in small groups in the first few weeks of August.

ALL New Students Attend Fall Welcome Orientation Monday, August 24-Wednesday, August 26 with new Resident Students moving onto campus prior to that.  More specific information about the opening of residence halls and our fall welcome programs will be sent to students throughout the summer, but it’s important that they reserve these dates so that they can fully participate in orientation and be prepared to begin classes on Thursday, August 27th.  All of us at RSC want students to be successful as they continue their educational journey.  Our orientation program and activities have been planned with their success in mind.

One of the benefits of being a part of a close-knit campus, like Russell Sage, is that all members of our community across two campuses– be they graduating students or prospective students, resident students or commuters– can be assured that there are ample people, programs, services, and events that are available to provide all with the support they need to accomplish their goals. We see one of our main roles as deans of students is to remind students that they are not alone and there are people who believe in them. We reach out to families to assure you of that truth, and to ask your help in making sure students access the support they need.

We collaborate with Undergraduate Academic Dean Deb Lawrence to write Family Newsletters throughout the year so that we can share a bit about our community with you, and to remind you that you are important members of our community as well. We will be collecting family email addresses at summer orientations and you can also provide us with your contact information at [email protected] if you would like to be added to our mailing list.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact the Dean of Students’ Offices with any questions or concerns. Our number is 518-244-2207 in Troy and 518-292-1753 in Albany. You can also reach us directly by email at the addresses listed below.
