Assistant Provost for Strategic Initiatives Peter Stapleton, Ph.D., received an Amazing People award at the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (NYS AHPERD) annual conference held in Verona, New York, November 20-23, 2024.

The Amazing People award honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions in the  disciplines of physical education, adapted physical education, health education, and dance education. Stapleton received the award for his work in higher education, which supports the professional development of future physical education and recreation professionals.

In addition to serving as assistant provost, Stapleton teaches in Russell Sage’s Physical Education bachelor’s program and Sport Science: Coaching and Mental Performance master’s program. He previously served as chair of RSC’s professional education programs and program director for the undergraduate physical education degree, and he was named the college’s Faculty Member of the Year at the end of the 2023-2024 academic year. He serves the Capital Zone of NYS AHPERD as the higher education representative.

“I’m honored to be recognized for the hard work and commitment to developing future professionals in physical education, health education, and coaching and supporting teachers and coaches in the Capital District,” Stapleton said.

At the same conference, Russell Sage College Adjunct Professor Kim Ferrie and Physical Education majors Gabriella Marchello and Colton Yetto led a session titled “Connecting FUN With ALL of Your Students,” with strategies and activities to make physical education fun for all.

“Presenting at the conference was a fantastic opportunity for RSC students in the Esteves School of Education’s physical education program,” said Ferrie. “While attending the conference they have had the opportunity to learn about emerging trends in the field, network with other professionals, and highlight the leading work being done at RSC.”
