Russell Sage College President Matthew Shaftel recently assumed leadership roles in key regional, state, and national higher education organizations.
Shaftel was elected to the board of trustees for the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities in New York (CICU), appointed secretary of the executive committee of New American Colleges & Universities (NACU), and elected co-chair of the New York Capital Region Higher Educational Council (NYCRHEC).
The board of trustees for CICU, which represents the public policy interests of more than 100 independent colleges and universities in New York state, is comprised of presidents of independent colleges and universities from every region of New York.
NACU is a network of institutions across the nation that collaborates to improve academic and business performance with research, strategy, and professional development.
NYCRHEC includes the presidents of more than 15 greater Capital Region colleges and universities and seeks to address issues in higher education. Shaftel was elected co-chair in January and has worked to partner NYCRHEC with regional business leaders on a campaign to address regional college attainment levels that will kick off this year.
He began his roles with CICU in March and NACU in June.
“It’s essential for Russell Sage to lead in harnessing the power of higher education to enhance quality of life, drive workforce development, and strengthen global competitiveness,” Shaftel said. “I’m honored to serve as president of Russell Sage and to help bring our Sage values of empowerment and social mobility to the state and national stage through active engagement with powerful organizations like NACU and CICU.”
