Russell Sage College is one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to the Great Colleges to Work For® program.
The honor, announced on September 18, 2026 at GreatCollegesList.com and in The Chronicle of Higher Education, is based on a survey of 171 colleges and universities.
Out of 76 higher education institutions that achieved recognition for specific best practices and policies, Russell Sage is one of only 42 institutions named to the prestigious Great Colleges to Work For® Honor Roll. The honor roll lists the colleges that are highlighted the most across the recognition categories.
Russell Sage won honors in five categories this year:

- Supervisor/Department Chair Effectiveness
- Confidence in Senior Leadership
- Faculty & Staff Well-being
- Shared Governance
“When we launched our Sage Forward strategic plan, earning ‘Great Colleges to Work For’ Honor Roll recognition was a goal,” said President Matt Shaftel. “Reaching this national benchmark ahead of schedule is a wonderful validation of the employee experience at Russell Sage. The “Great Colleges to Work For” list is based on a two-part assessment process: an institution questionnaire that captures employment data and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.
