Program Highlights

Designed for those with an undergraduate degree in art or art-related fields, this Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in art education leads to New York State Visual Arts Certification, pre-K through 12th grade and is the only art education degree program near Albany, New York!


The curriculum includes art content courses that explore art history, criticism and aesthetics, multiculturalism, and design analysis with studio practice. Start in the summer and experience the feel of a summer residency program, with a sense of community and two exhibitions. 

Two student teaching placements (one secondary, one elementary), plus experiential learning opportunities in schools, museums and galleries, community organizations, and more

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in art education is small, which allows for brainstorming, learning best practices, and problem-solving with faculty who care about student success. Faculty are practicing artist-educators, aware of current issues in art education.

Every education student takes a required course in Positive Education, with the opportunity to complete additional modules and earn a microbadge issued by The Center for Positive Education.

Course Requirements

Credits and Completion

Our Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in art education is 30 credits and can be completed in three semesters of full-time study or two years of part-time study.
